Magic Kingdom is undergoing a few transformations right now, and the next time you head back into the park, things might be a little different.

Tomorrowland in Magic Kingdom
Big Thunder Mountain is still closed for refurbishment until 2026. We also have large construction walls up around the Rivers of America to make way for the new Piston Peak Cars area coming in the future. Now, over in Tomorrowland, we just had another ride close for a lengthy refurbishment. We’re talking about Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, which is getting some big upgrades.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has officially closed as of August 4, 2025, for a comprehensive refurbishment. The ride, a fan favorite shooting adventure themed to Buzz Lightyear’s mission to defeat Zurg, is receiving some significant updates.

Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin closed on August 4, 2025, with an expected reopening sometime in 2026. This downtime is part of a strategic effort by Walt Disney Imagineering to modernize the ride through new show elements, updated ride technology, and enhanced guest interactivity. Inside the attraction, guests can expect a fresh new introductory scene featuring a robot companion named “Buddy”, who helps train space cadets and showcases the updated interactivity before the main mission begins. There are also new ride vehicles.

Most notably, the ride will transition from fixed vehicle‑mounted shooters to handheld blasters. These new blasters feature always‑activated lasers, dual‑color options to distinguish players, and incorporate lighting, sound, and vibration effects. This makes the targeting more immersive. Meanwhile, the static “Z” targets throughout the ride will be replaced with reactive targets that light up and animate when successfully hit.

We reported that a Notice of Commencement permit was filed in early June, naming Elite A/V Systems Inc. as the contractor for electrical work tied to the overhaul. The permit runs for up to a year, signalling a full interior systems retrofit and possibly supporting further enhancements down the line.

As of August 4th, no construction walls were erected around the building. There was only signage covering the doors, and the queue remains undisturbed for now. The windows facing the PeopleMover have been darkened, and the outdoor audio commentary referencing Buzz has been temporarily paused. We may expect external walls or updated theming to appear later in the process, especially once the interior has made progress. Disney has not announced any queue reconfigurations yet.

Closed for Refurbishment
