A big change is coming soon for Americans traveling to Europe!
Traveling can be stressful, especially when heading out of the country. If you’re the type who likes to know exactly what to expect to cut down on anxiety from surprises, we’ve got an important update about a change that’s coming soon for Americans traveling to Europe.
After several previous delays, Europe’s long-awaited Entry/Exit System (EES) is expected to launch in October 2025. The EES is an automated system for registering non-European Union nationals traveling to Europe for a short stay (up to 90 days within a 180-day period) when they cross the borders of any of the 29 European countries participating in the system.
When the EES system officially begins, non-EU citizens will have their fingerprints taken or face photographed by passport control officers, which will be recorded in a digital file.
Upon returning, this information will only need to be verified, which should be quicker than the initial visit. Also, passports will no longer be stamped, as this system will make the process entirely digital.
The new system is intended to modernize border management in Europe, improve security, and combat identity fraud. The Entry/Exit system is currently expected to begin in October 2025, and the European Union will provide a specific start date in the months prior to launch.
When the system does begin, it’s important to factor in potential delays at European airports, especially in the first few months. We’ll be on the lookout for a confirmed launch date, so stay tuned to DFB for more updates.
