As someone who dreads the chaotic drive to Orlando International Airport, I am excited to see that the train connecting the airport to Tampa is moving forward.
According to the Orlando Business Journal, the Brightline expansion is receiving strong support from business leaders along the I-4 corridor.
Brightline proposed a $400 million expansion that would connect the railroad system from Orlando to Tampa, in addition to its existing route from Miami to Orlando.
Jason Siegel, president and CEO of the Greater Orlando Sports Commission, has spoken highly of Brightline and its ability to connect the state’s most prominent sports and tourism hubs.
Siegel said, “Expanding Brightline to Tampa is the next crucial step for Florida’s sports and tourism industries. Tampa is not just known as a growing economic center, but also a major destination for world-class sporting events, tournaments, and entertainment that draws thousands of visitors from across the state and beyond.”
He believes it can “unlock billions in long-term economic growth, job creation, and increased capacity to host major marquee events across the corridor.”
Other business leaders, such as Maria Triscari, president and CEO of the International Drive Resort Area Chamber of Commerce, and Grace Thompson of the Orlando Economic Partnership, are encouraging the expansion of the train system to increase tourism and employment opportunities.
If you’ve ever dealt with traffic around the Orlando International Airport, you know how exhausting the traffic can be. Using the train from Tampa can help reduce car traffic and provide alternative transportation options.
