There are a lot of rules at Disney World. Some are official guidelines passed down by Disney themselves, while others are more “unofficial” expressions of theme park etiquette. Both types of “rules” extend to the kinds of images you see guests sharing on social media.
Turns out that some of these Disney World trends often seen on social media are specifically against the rules, and could lead to big trouble for those who try and mimic them!
Let’s begin with PhotoPass.
Disney’s PhotoPass service provides “picture-perfect memories of your whole family at iconic park locations—plus capture photos and videos at select attractions.” When the photos are taken, guests can use their MagicBand, Disney PhotoPass card, theme park ticket, or annual pass to link the images to their MyDisney account.
From there, guests can view and purchase photo downloads, prints to share, or even other merchandise like mugs emblazoned with their image. In addition, guests can purchase Memory Maker before or during their trip, which gives them the opportunity to buy all of their PhotoPass photos for the duration of their trip.
So, what’s the rule-breaking issue? Well, you’ve likely noticed that some Disney World guests will share watermarked PhotoPass images that they haven’t purchased on social media. While we understand the desire to do so, it’s against the rules. In fact, these screenshots are from desktops because the MyDisneyExperience app blocks screenshots and screen recordings of unpurchased PhotoPass images.
While this PhotoPass issue is somewhat rampant, it’s not the only rule technically being broken by many online. Some others include:
- Reselling: Technically, it’s against the rules to sell exclusive Disney merchandise items or tickets, including those to events like the sold-out Oogie Boogie Bash, on sites like eBay or other online storefronts.
- Jumping in Fountains: Going into Disney World’s fountains is not a good idea. It’s dangerous, ruins the photos other guests are trying to take, and it just leaves you soaking wet in a theme park without having experienced a water ride.
There are some Disney World behaviors that, despite often being displayed online, are against the rules and could lead to some negative consequences. Stay tuned to DFB for more on Disney World’s rules.
