Well, it happened. We got to travel to Hong Kong Disneyland to check out the huge 20th Anniversary Celebration there.
We got to do it all, too, including eating some of the WILDEST food ever (and we want MORE), seeing some incredible celebratory entertainment, and getting to meet Disney characters in their special Hong Kong Disneyland 20th Anniversary outfits. It was UH-mazing. However, speaking of Uh-mazing, we also fell in love with breakfast at Chart Room Cafe at Disney Explorers Lodge at the resort…and we think we need to fly back to China to have it again.
Atmosphere
Chart Room Cafe takes the theme of Disney Explorers Lodge and expands upon it. Think Disney’s Wilderness Lodge meets the SEA (Society of Explorers and Adventurers). The restaurant is dedicated to the spirit of exploration, which you can see in the restaurant’s sign.
The cafe is a quick service location, so you’ll order at a counter.
You’ll see a display of various food and drinks behind the counter.
The entire vibe is what we’re going to call “explorers casual,” with plenty of tables and comfy chairs for seating.
But enough about the restaurant — what’s on the menu here?!
Menu
The breakfast menu includes Hong Kong, Chinese, and American breakfast favorites, as well as coffees, teas, and other beverages.
And now, onto the main event — the food!
Eats
First up, we grabbed the Chinese Breakfast, with siu miu, har gow, mushroom bun, and congee of the day. It’s served with coffee, Hong Kong-style milk tea, or fruit juice. We chose coffee. First up, we’re just going to tell you that we love this breakfast SO MUCH. This is what breakfast should be with savory dumplings and things, high protein, and congee. This is the breakfast of Mulan, who saved ALL OF CHINA, and you can’t tell us otherwise.
The Mushroom Bun has a lovely sweetness to it, but also like umami. Inside, it’s like a gravy texture. Plus the bun is so nice and soft.
Har Gow is also called Crystal Shrimp Dumpling and is made with shrimp meat wrapped in a flour wrapper. The flour wrapper is then steamed, which makes the wrapper almost translucent. These dumplings had perfectly cooked shrimp with the right amount of resistance when you bite into the dumpling and the rice paper surrounding the shrimp meat.
Our favorite was the Siu Mai, which is like a steamed pork dumpling. It’s full of flavor and has a nice savory taste. There are lovely aromatics in it. This is the most perfect dumpling in the history of dumplings. It’s also the perfect size because you can just pop it into your mouth and enjoy.
The Congee is a rice porridge, and it has some lovely flavors. We tasted chicken broth in it, and there were even bits of chicken in it. It’s so flavorful, savory, and warm, but it still feels like a breakfast food while not being what you might think of as a traditional breakfast food.
We liked the Congee so much that we tried to replicate the recipe at home, but it just didn’t compare.
Nosh or Not
This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if…
- You want a traditional Chinese breakfast. If you want to try something traditional to the country you’re visiting, this is it.
- You prefer savory breakfasts over sweet. This is a savory breakfast, so no muffins or sweet croissants here.
- You want a quick breakfast. This is a quick-service spot, so you just order your food at a counter and grab it.
You should skip this Disney World spot if…
- You want a regular American breakfast. Although there is an American breakfast available here, it’s not entirely a traditional one.
- You want a table service meal. If you want something where you sit at a table and servers wait on you while you spend time on your meal, this isn’t it.
- You have picky eaters in your group. Picky eaters might not appreciate the breakfast items here.
Overall
Overall, we loved our breakfast at Chart Room Cafe, and we’re still having happy dreams about it. Everything was delicious, and it was so nice to have such a savory and hearty breakfast to power us through our day visiting Hong Kong Disneyland. It was a lot like having dim sum for breakfast, and we think that should really be a thing here in the States. The only thing we aren’t happy about is that we don’t live close enough to have this breakfast on a regular basis. It’s okay, congee, we’ll remember you fondly in our thoughts.

I find baked beans and mushrooms on the “American” plate hilarious as those are commonly found on British breakfasts, not in the US so much. Since I’m not afraid of abalone, having been introduced to it by Taiwanese friends, I might consider the Hong Kong breakfast, but I do love all those little Chinese dumplings, so depending upon my mood that morning, I might go with that. The Mickey waffles with scrambled eggs and fruit are closer to what I might eat at WDW, but why travel that far just to have what you would at home, right?
