Are you ready to enter the Twilight Zone?

Tower of Terror
No, we’re not talking about the Tower of Terror ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. We’re talking about the brand-new movie that’s in the works! That’s right, another classic Disney ride is being brought to the big screen, and we have an update.
World-renowned actress Scarlett Johansson, the producer of the Tower of Terror film, is now working on developing the story of the iconic Disney World attraction, according to Entertainment Weekly. “It’s a hard nut to crack. Harder than you think, because the ride itself, there’s some lore to it, but it’s… I don’t want to say thin, but it is, kind of!” Scarlett Johansson says.

She continued to speak on the storyline of the ride, stating it “doesn’t have much to dig into” when turning it into a full-length movie. Which is fair to say, considering it’s being based on a four-minute-long attraction. That does leave a lot of room for creativity to expand on the story, which Scarlett touches up on. “That’s part of the mystery of the ride. It’s been a fun project to work on because it’s a blue-sky project. It has also proved to be a hard nut to crack. But we’ll crack the case of it. It’s taking shape!”

Courtyard at Tower of Terror
The ride at Disney World is based on Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone TV series. You know the story: five guests enter the Twilight Zone after being in an elevator at the Hollywood Tower Hotel that is struck by lightning. Fun fact, this also isn’t the first movie to be made after the attraction. Disney released a movie called Tower of Terror that released in 1997.

Maybe we shouldn’t ride this elevator!
This isn’t the first time Disney has turned iconic park attractions into movies, and it definitely won’t be the last! Rides like Haunted Mansion and Jungle Cruise have been adapted into movies after the rides were built. Taking Disney park goers deeper into those stories. Are we missing another? Oh, right, Pirates of the Caribbean was also based on the fan-favorite attraction!

Pirates of the Caribbean
The success of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise inspired changes to the original attractions. Due to the popularity of everyone’s favorite pirate, they added Jack Sparrow to scenes in the ride. It makes you wonder if changes would be made to the Tower of Terror based on whether the film is successful.

Love the OG Tower of Terror film from 1997 that started Steve Guttenberg and Kristen Dunst. It is a proud member of my DVD collection. My daughter was obsessed with that movie and the ride story for many of her years between 7 and 10. 🙂
