The Magic Kingdom’s upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean lounge looks to take inspiration from one of Disney’s most successful eateries of the 21st century, and we’re hoping that goes all the way down to the tiki mugs!
The Beak and Barrel, scheduled to open later this year, will be themed as a pirate bar founded by the “legendary pirate rumrunner” Captain Meridian “Merry” Goldwyn, and her “talkative first mate” Rummy, an animatronic parrot who will “keep an eye on the place” from a roost atop the bar.”
Looking at the concept art for the new space, we can’t help but note some similarities to another of Disney’s themed lounge concepts: Trader Sam’s.
Both the original Trader Sam’s at the Disneyland Hotel and Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Disney World’s Polynesian Village Resort feature intricate theme and interactive elements, the same type that are scheduled to be part of the Beak and Barrel.
For example, the bar’s Captain’s Quarters room will feature “five ships in a bottle sitting on the mantle mounted above the fireplace that are “rumored to represent pirates from every corner of the world banding together to defeat tyranny.” According to Disney, guests should “keep a weathered eye out, as these mysterious bottles have been known to come alive and engage in a fearsome battle.”
So, with these similarities noted, we’re hoping another of Trader Sam’s trademark offerings comes to The Beak and Barrel — TIKI MUGS.
The four we hope to see at the start include:
Davey Jones
One of the most visually distinctive characters in the Pirates film franchise, Davey Jones, also appeared as a projection in the attraction.
The Redhead
The iconic Redd herself should be one of the first pirates immortalized as a mug. Naturally, we’re hoping she’s cast and painted in red.
The Black Pearl
Over the years, several vehicles have been made into tiki mugs and bowls, including the Nautilus, meaning that Jack Sparrow’s iconic ship would make a perfect deluxe addition to any collection.
The Dog Holding the Keys
Finally, a Pirates of the Caribbean collection of mugs would be incomplete without the best-known theme park-specific Disney dog.
As we eagerly await Beak and Barrel’s “maiden voyage,” we’re hoping this new Magic Kingdom lounge takes inspiration from the iconic Trader Sam’s. Stay tuned to DFB for more on Disney World’s newest bar.
