We’ve got fantastic news for those of you who often drive to Disney World!
If you’ve made that drive even just once, you likely ran into some pretty intense traffic on I-4. This shaves off tons of time getting to your destination as long as you DON’T hit traffic, which is pretty common. However, a change has just been completed on the road that will help alleviate traffic in a pretty big section!
According to the Orlando Sentinel, two new lanes have just been opened on a six mile section of I-4. This means that in that section, there are now FOUR lanes each direction instead of three. These “congestion relief” lanes run from east of U.S. 27 in Polk County to World Drive near Disney Springs.
These new lanes are open to ALL drivers, not just those who need to pay a toll. Citizens who often travel on these roads have already started to share that this change has shaved tons of time of their daily commute, as much as 20-30 minutes in some cases! The project was completed eight months AHEAD of the original schedule and “signifies the start of a larger $2.5 billion project that aims to add express lanes, widen shoulders and improve interchanges on I-4.”
While the new lanes will not be expanded throughout more sections of I-4, even after the larger project is complete, a “pay-as-you-go” toll road will be added in the future stretching from these current lanes to the express lanes available right now from Kirkman Road in Orange County into Seminole County. Eventually, at the project’s completion, there will be a 21 mile stretch of road where commuters can choose to pay the toll to skip the worst of the traffic.
We’re really looking forward to seeing these changes, and in particular how they can help commuters reach their destinations (such as Disney World!) faster, so be sure to stay tuned to DFB for all the latest news and updates.

Soooo…a “fast pass” to Disney?? Lol
This is so exciting. I-4 near the parks is a nightmare. I was even considering getting a SunPass or E-Z Pass after our last trip. Maybe I’ll hold off for one more trip to see how things are. Thanks for the updates DFB!
