It’s no secret that we love The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn. It’s just one of those super special places in Disney World where you can have a fancy meal and an even fancier slice of cake.
Now, don’t get us wrong — this is not somewhere you’d want to eat every day of your Disney World trip, but it is where you go for a special occasion (or if you just want to feel special). However, we do return here often, especially when new menu items drop. Well, five new menu items have arrived at The Cake Bake Shop and you bet we dropped everything to go check them out.
So let’s dive into these new items. We’re going to start on the savory side of things. The Avocado Stack is $22 and is served with crumbled goat cheese, shallots, tomatoes, and balsamic pearls and served with a sliced toasted French baguette. Our reporter doesn’t even like avocado, but LOVED this, so that’s saying a lot. It’s got all these lovely layers of vegetables, and they’re all tasty.
There’s a tanginess, but you also get a saucier taste due to the balsamic pearls and the vinaigrette on bottom. The baguette is good, but that avocado is so bright against the goat cheese. Everything all together just makes this something that nearly melts in your mouth.
Another new item that’s SURE to fill you up is the 12-Layer Club Sandwich for $28, made with French ham, avocado, fresh tomato, crisp smoked bacon, oven-roasted turkey, baby spinach, Gruyere cheese, Maille Dijon mustard, and homemade basil aioli and served with pommes frites (gluten-free bread is available for an additional $2). This sandwich is GORGEOUS. This is like the grown-up sandwich of a ham sandwich, so it’s elevated.
You get those veggie layers and the saltier meat against the cheeses, and the flavors just combine beautifully. The seasoned French fries are also nice, especially with the ketchup and garlic aioli on the side.
However, the Caprese Sandwich didn’t wow us. For $26, you get freshly sliced tomatoes, homemade walnut pesto, basil, and mozzarella on a toasted baguette, served with arugula salad. This was middle of the road for us — it wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t great. The cheese is what you get the most of on this sandwich, followed by the greens. It’s basically a salad on a baguette.
Okay, time for our FAVORITE part of a meal…DESSERT. Now, we’ve had some good cake slices here, so we expect a LOT from a $22 slice of cake. The Neapolitan Cake is a new seasonal flavor made with Valrhona French chocolate cake, vanilla cake, and strawberry cake, filled and topped with strawberry buttercream and decorative silk flowers. It’s also VERY pretty with all those colors.
It’s so sparkly with all the layers, but it’s also beautifully flavored. You get that nice strawberry flavor with the strawberry layer, a nice chocolatey flavor with the chocolate layer, and then the vanilla flavor. It tastes as pretty as it looks!
However, our favorite cake slice this trip was the Lemon Blueberry Cake, a new seasonal flavor now available. For $22, you get a slice of lemon zest cake with fresh blueberries, filled with lemon curd and lemon buttercream and topped with lemon buttercream and fresh blueberries. This cake is just beautifully put together.
It’s got a super lemony flavor, but it’s a softer, sweeter lemon, and not too tart. The frosting is so light, too, and we loved it. The blueberries are super fresh and add a nice balance to the lemon. We will note that the lemon layers in this cake are a bit thicker than what you’d find in The Cake Bake Shop’s other fruity cakes, so you get a nice lemony zing with each bite.
Needless to say, we’ll be back at The Cake Bake Shop again soon, especially if we spot any new menu items, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
