Okay, so we’ve had some pretty nice surprises when it comes to Star Wars casting recently.
First, it was a stroke of genius when Disney cast The Good Place’s Manny Jacinto as a Sith in The Acolyte (and I will forever mourn the loss of that show and what could’ve been). Then we got Jude Law in Skeleton Crew, and as a longtime Jude Law fan, this made me really happy. Well, another of my favorite actors could soon be in Star Wars, and y’all, this one BLEW MY MIND. It’s Ryan Gosling. Ryan Gosling might be in a Star Wars movie!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Gosling is currently in negotiations to star in a new Star Wars movie directed by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy. Yes, everything about that sentence pleases me. This usually means they’re talking money, and all I can say is that Disney should pay Ryan whatever he asks for, because he is KENOUGH (sorry, I had to). I’ve been a fan of his since The Notebook.
Of course, getting details on this Star Wars project isn’t happening because Disney likes to say SUPER tight-lipped about these things, but we do know that Levy has been working on the movie since 2022 and that Jonathan Tropper (who worked with Levy on This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project) has been working on a script for more than a year. All we really know is that this is a standalone movie and not part of the other ongoing Star Wars films that are also in development.
Okay, so we already know that Ryan is a HUGE star with a lot of appeal to moviegoers, but he’s also got three Oscar nominations under his belt, so he’s got the acting chops to play in any universe he wants to, including Star Wars. Let’s face it — we hadn’t seen ALL sides of him until we saw him in Barbie, showing that he isn’t just a good dramatic actor, but he’s got comedy chops, too.
This would also be one of the first times a Star Wars project has gone with a HUGE name to star in one of its movies — the franchise generally casts lesser-known actors who go on to become huge celebrities later (no one knew who Mark Hamill or Harrison Ford were when the first Star Wars movie released). So yes, I’m excited about this news, and also wondering just how big of a movie this project will end up being. They want to bring HUGE star power to the film, and I’m here for it.
