It’s always a great idea to make sure you’re fully prepared before sailing with the Disney Cruise Line!
It is always our mission to bring you the latest Disney cruise tips. From dining advice to must-bring essentials, there are plenty of tidbits you should know about before setting sail. As the Disney Cruise Line often visits several countries worldwide, you should also know about the places you’re about to visit. The U.S. Department of State offers travel advisories for every foreign nation and many islands, giving insight into the general safety of every destination. If you’re cruising soon, read ahead and check out the current travel advisories for your upcoming Disney destinations!
All of the following locations fall into one of four U.S. Department of State travel advisory levels. Starting with the least to most severe levels, each destination is home to a port for the Disney Cruise Line. While these travel advisory levels are current as of this writing, be sure to double-check their status on the U.S. Department of State website before your trip, as levels can shift abruptly.
Level 1 — Exercise Normal Precautions
Countries with a Level 1 travel advisory are considered to generally be safe. Level 1 is the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk, but keep in mind international travel is never fully without risk.
The following countries and states are all classified by the U.S. Department of State as Level 1 destinations that require normal precautions:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Aruba
- Australia
- Barbados
- Bermuda
- Bonaire
- British Virgin Islands
- Canada
- Cayman Islands
- Curaçao
- Dominica
- Fiji
- Greece
- Grenada
- Ireland
- Malta
- New Zealand
- Norway
- Portugal
- Progreso, Yucatán state, Mexico
- Saint Kitts and Nevis
- Saint Lucia
- Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
- Singapore
- Sint Maarten
Level 2 — Exercise Increased Caution
Travelers visiting destinations with a Level 2 travel advisory should exercise increased caution. That means travelers should be aware of heightened risks to safety and security. Locations found in this level often have issues with petty and violent crime, kidnapping, civil unrest, and threats of terrorism.
Level 2 travel advisory areas include the following Disney Destinations:
- Bahamas — Crime and shark attacks
- Belgium — Terrorism
- Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur state, Mexico — Crime
- Cozumel, Qunitana Roo state, Mexico — Crime
- France — Terrorism and civil unrest
- Italy — Terrorism
- Netherlands — Terrorism
- Panama — Crime and potential for civil unrest
- Spain — Terrorism and civil unrest
- Sweden — Terrorism
- Turkey — Terrorism and arbitrary detentions
- United Kingdom (England and Scotland) — Terrorism
Level 3 — Reconsider Travel
A Level 3 travel advisory designation indicates you should reconsider travel. While Disney takes the proper precautions to make port at safer locations, these destinations under Level 3 are susceptible to conditions that pose serious risks to safety and security. These locations include heightened risk of Level 2 potential issues and can go even further with problems like kidnapping and frequent violent crime.
The following Disney Destinations are located within the Level 3 travel advisories:
- Colombia — Crime, civil unrest, kidnapping, and terrorism
- Ensenada, Baja California state, Mexico — Crime and kidnapping
- Jamaica — Crime and poor health care services
- Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco state, Mexico — Crime and kidnapping
- New Caledonia — Crime and civil unrest
Level 4 — Do Not Travel
Locations classified with a Level 4 travel advisory are not recommended for travel. According to the U.S. Department of State, “this is the highest advisory level due to greater likelihood of life-threatening risks. During an emergency, the U.S. government may have very limited ability to provide assistance. The Department of State advises that U.S. citizens not travel to the country or to leave as soon as it is safe to do so.”
The Disney Cruise line currently does not visit any locations that meet this criteria.
Travel Within the United States and U.S. Territories
The U.S. Department of State does not provide travel advisories for travel within the United States or its territories, but our neighbors up north have their own advisories regarding U.S. travel.
According to the Government of Canada, U.S. States (and Disney Destinations) such as Alaska, California, Texas, and Florida, as well as territories such as Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa require normal security precautions.
As we previously mentioned, travel advisories are always subject to change so be sure to check with the U.S. Department of State before your trip and stay tuned right here at DFB for all the latest Disney Cruise Line updates!
