Is it just us or is it just really hard to get into streaming TV shows right now without fear of them being canceled.
We’ve seen it happen with some of our favorites, too. For example, Amazon ended My Lady Jane after just one season (and we hadn’t even finished it yet!). Then we’ve seen other shows we really liked get canceled after just one season, like Dead Boy Detectives on Netflix. Even shows that seemed popular are getting the axe after one or two seasons. Well, Hulu isn’t innocent in its cancellation efforts because we’ve already seen four shows on Hulu get the axe in 2024.
So far, in 2024, Hulu has canceled four of its original TV shows. Here’s what’s been canceled.
Black Cake
In September, Deadline revealed that Hulu would not renew Black Cake after one season. The series starred Adrienne Warren and Mia Isaac and was based on the bestselling book of the same name by Charmaine Wilkerson. It had a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and landed NAACP Image Awards nominations, as well as a GLAAD Media Awards nomination. The series was a family drama and murder mystery based on a woman who went missing in the 1960s, covering several time periods in Jamaica, Rome, Scotland, England, and Southern California.
It took 10 months for Hulu to announce the series’ cancellation, and it was reportedly being shopped to Netflix, but those discussions seem to have fallen through. Netflix was one of the orignal bidders on the series, though, before Hulu made the highest bid. It seems like the series might have done better at Netflix, but we’ll never know now.
Unprisoned
Another show canceled by Hulu in September, according to Variety, is Unprisoned, which starred Kerry Washington, Delroy Lindo, Faly Rakotohavana, Marque Richardson, Jordyn McIntosh, and Jee Young Han. The show is about a marriage and family therapist whose life becomes chaos when her father is released from prison and moves in with her and her family.
The show premiered on Hulu in 2023, with it second season premiering in July 2024. Both of its seasons have an average 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Life & Beth
Even comedic actress Amy Schumer couldn’t escape Hulu’s cancellation axe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, her series, Life & Beth was canceled after just two seasons. The show follows a seemingly successful woman (played by Schumer) who realizes how unhappy she is with her life, so she travels back to her childhood home and considers starting over.
Although Hulu doesn’t release viewing data for its shows, Life & Beth did not make Nielsen’s top 10 streaming list during either of its two seasons.
The D’Amelio Show
This summer, Deadline reported that The D’Amelio Show would not return to Hulu for a fourth season. The reality show followed social media star Charli D’Amelio and her family as they navigated their newfound fame. When the show premiered in 2021, it was Hulu’s most-watched unscripted series.
However, Hulu decided that three seasons was enough for the show, but the D’Amelio family has other things to focus on in the meantime, including a slew of endorsement deals and D’Amelio Brands.
So if those are all shows you were watching, we’re sorry to break the news to you. We’ll likely see even more cancellations before the end of 2024.
