Over here, we have a love for Southwest Airlines!
It makes sense when they offer some great deals and discounts on airfare, and what’s not to love about the “two free checked bags” policy? These are just a couple of the things that sets Southwest Airlines apart from the rest. That being said, one of their most unique policies could be changing soon and we have thoughts from the experts. Let’s talk about it!
What policy are we talking about? We’re talking about Southwest Airlines’ seating policy. You know, the one where you don’t get an assigned seat (just a letter and number indicating your boarding group) meaning that when you board, you get to pick any open seat that you want.
So what about this policy could be changing? Well, according to CNBC, in response to a weaker first quarter, Southwest CEO Bob Jordan recently shared “We’re looking into new initiatives, things like the way we seat and board our aircraft.”
Interestingly, for years Southwest has been asked by analysts about things like opportunities for premium seating or other additional fees. Southwest does offer its Early Bird program, which lets you pay a little extra to board early (but you’re still not guaranteed your seating), but these comments from CEO Jordan could see the company shift from its policy to only have a single class, to a multi-class cabin.
Jordan has mentioned that at the moment no decisions have been made on the changes Southwest will make. He also double-downed that Southwest is not considering charging for checked bags (all Southwest Airlines fans can rejoice!).
We’ll keep you updated on any changes by Southwest Airlines the moment they happen, so keep it right here at DFB!

I’m horrified to think Southwest would want to get rid of everything that makes it fun and unique, but I have seen it going that way over the last several years. I just sent this to Southwest. Hopefully enough customers will also contact them and they will pay attention!
I’ve been flying you since 1979 and love you bc you are unique! The last twenty years have seen a few changes I don’t like, mostly bc you are trying to be like the other big airlines. DON’T!!! You’ve already started by getting rid of peanuts (even though the snacks are made in a nut facility by the same peanut company!) and now are getting quite strict and nasty (which gate agents never were) about something extra people might carryon such as a phone crossbody, a throw or neck pillow forcing people to check bags. Ridiculous! But now I see that you’ve been taken over by some activist investment egotist who wants to get rid of everything that makes Southwest fun and nice to fly!!?? Worse, you may change seating and boarding!!?? How can you even think this??? We fly Southwest bc we like the way it is!! If it ain’t broke…dont fix it!!! I will not reserve seats ahead of boarding. I want to choose my seat when I get on. And while I may pay for Earlybird, I will NOT pay to buy a seat on top of buying a ticket as the other airlines do! I like the A.B.C. boarding by number. It’s efficient and I’ve never heard anyone say they don’t like it. I’m in Albany, NY and you don’t fly nonstop to Florida like you used to but I won’t be flying at all if you put these ill-advised and ill-conceived notions into practice. And I would bet that way too many people would simply boycott you if you do mimic the other airlines. I know I will! Please stay the way Herb made you and the way longtime customers love you!
PS If this activist didn’t like Southwest, why did he buy it only to demand changes that will kill it???

I would hate to see this go away from southwest (seating policy). It is one of the biggest decisions that we chose southwest over other airlines and we fly frequently!
