It’s a holiday week — and you know what that means! Disney World is about to get all red, white, and blue for the 4th of July.
That means we’re seeing some red, white, and blue decor up in Magic Kingdom, and we’re getting ready to dive into some delicious 4th of July snacks that are well, red, white, and blue (you see where we’re going with this, right?). Well, Sleepy Hollow Refreshments in Liberty Square is appropriately serving up a red, white, and blue snack RIGHT NOW, so we’re checking it out.
So we’ll warn you now: Sleepy Hollow has been serving up disappointment since it got rid of our favorite waffle sandwiches, so we’re already still a little ticked off at this food spot. But we still ordered the Red, White, and Blue Funnel Cake — for science! It’s a funnel cake topped with mixed berries, vanilla ice cream, and festive sprinkles for $8.29. Y’all, this thing looks sad (we bet it misses the waffles, too).
Obviously, a big problem in serving up a hot funnel cake topped with ice cream and whipped cream IN THE SUMMER in Florida is going to look like a disaster pretty quickly because of melting. That probably explains why most funnel cakes are usually topped with powdered sugar or syrups that don’t melt. Anyway, we LOVE funnel cake, we do. But this one…is NOT IT.
Everything about it is just fine, but the berries are not fresh, nor did they taste sweet enough. The funnel cake was fresh and hot and fried to a nice level of crispiness, but it also lacked flavor. So you’ve got flavorless berries on top of a flavorless funnel cake. It’s a no from us. This might’ve been better with powdered sugar instead of ice cream.
We also picked up the Red, White, and Brownie for $5.69. It’s a red velvet-brown butter brownie with cream cheese icing, graham streusel, and caramel. Does that sound rich? Because IT IS. It’s exactly the OPPOSITE of the funnel cake because it’s loaded with sugary flavor. It is a heavy dense brownie that pairs great with the light cream cheese frosting. Plus it’s festive!
We didn’t think the graham cracker streusel or the caramel drizzle really added anything. We do prefer more chocolate flavor than most of Disney’s red velvet snacks offer, and that’s the case here. We’ll also say that its size is deceiving: it might look small, but it’s so rich that we DARE you to finish it in one sitting.
We picked up the brownie at Riverside Mill Food Court at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside, but it’s also available at:
- Intermission Food Court at Disney’s All-Star Music Resort
- End Zone Food Court at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort
- Landscape of Flavors at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort
- Centertown Market at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort
- Spyglass Grill at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort
- Everything POP Shopping & Dining at Disney’s Pop Century Resort
- Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter
If you’re staying at any of those hotels, it’s a nice seasonal snack, but we don’t think it’s worth traveling across Disney World to get.
Stay tuned to DFB for more.
