For some folks, a Disney vacation is all about the thrills of exhilarating rides and meeting every beloved character you can. For some folks, it isn’t really a vacation until you can relax with a specialty adult beverage (or, heck, even a basic beer) in your hand.
But if your vacation involves a combination of these personalities and your destination is Disneyland, you might wonder where exactly you can find a tasty libation in the happiest place on earth.
Ah, the evolving saga of Disneyland and its stance on booze! Walt Disney, the mastermind behind the charming theme park, was dead set against alcohol in his park, fearing it would attract a crowd more interested in causing chaos than enjoying the enchantment. He wasn’t just waving his magic wand at random; he had a vision!
But fast forward a bit, and lo and behold, Club 33 pops up, the swanky VIP lounge dripping with exclusivity and booze. Apparently, Walt had a change of heart posthumously, or maybe he just figured, “Hey, if it’s hidden away from the masses, it’s all good.”
Then along comes Bob Iger, the big cheese in the Disney universe, chuckling at Walt’s dry park dreams as he opens up the gates to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and lets the drinks flow like the Force. Now, Oga’s Cantina is the happening spot in Galaxy’s Edge, serving up libations that would make even Jabba the Hutt raise an eyebrow. From the Fuzzy Tauntaun to the Dagobah Slug Slinger, they’re mixing up drinks that are out of this world, literally.
Sure, it’s partly about cashing in on thirsty tourists, but it’s also about embracing the vibe of the Star Wars universe. I mean, who wouldn’t want to sip a cocktail in a bar straight out of the movies? It’s like stepping into a scene with Han Solo and Chewie, minus the blaster battles (hopefully). Blue Bayou followed this 2019 shift in the beverage paradigm when it began to serve alcohol in 2021.
Looks like Disneyland is continuing its journey down the boozy rabbit hole! In 2023, Disney announced the inclusion of alcohol on the menu at three other locations. Carnation Café, River Belle Terrace, and Café Orleans. It’s like they’re sprinkling a little extra magic with your meal.
But hey, hold onto your Mickey ears, because they’re not turning the whole park into a drinking game just yet. No plans for booze stands popping up left and right like at California Adventure. Disneyland’s still keeping its vibe as a mostly non-drinking theme park intact.
Adding adult beverages to the dinner menu? That’s more like a subtle enhancement than a total makeover. It’s not like Mickey’s suddenly going to start serving martinis at breakfast.
So yeah, Disneyland’s taking a step closer to the land of libations, but they’re not diving in headfirst. And honestly, I’m cool with that. Let’s keep the magic alive without turning Main Street into Bourbon Street, am I right? Just remember, with great cocktails comes great responsibility – especially when you’re piloting the Millennium Falcon later on!
