In September 2023, Disney World’s Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser closed its doors for good, just 19 months after it first opened.
The Star Wars hotel and experience was certainly something different for Disney as it combined elements of roleplaying with Star Wars storytelling and a hotel stay. There were planned outings to Batuu, lightsaber training sessions, and even training sessions on the bridge learning to fly a starcruiser. However, the pricey venture didn’t quite work out for Disney in the end, and it closed. But a remnant of that experience is still hanging around Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
If you visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you are certainly going to feel very immersed in the story of Batuu. However, if you visit the bathrooms in the First Order area of Galaxy’s Edge, you need to pay attention. Listen very carefully because you’ll hear advertisements for the Halcyon (the Galactic Starcruiser’s name).
You’ll also hear music from galactic pop star Gaia who appeared regularly as a performer on the Galactic Starcruiser. So once more, the Halcyon might be gone, but it’s not forgotten.
Of course, the Halcyon remains a part of Star Wars history in other ways. You can read all about how the ship was the honeymoon destination for Han Solo and Princess Leia in the novel Star Wars: The Princess and the Scoundrel. In true Han and Leia fashion, though, their honeymoon is quickly derailed by a planet that needs their help.
For a while, there was even a tribute to the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser in Hollywood Studios: Visitors were tying ribbons on the gate that leads to the Galactic Starcruiser shuttle. We’ve also seen merchandise from the Starcruiser turn up online. We’ve also seen drinks from the Halcyon’s Sublight Lounge turn up in Disneyland.
We’ll keep an eye out for more nods to the Halcyon, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
