It was announced in early 2023 that streaming would be a major priority for The Walt Disney Company.
CEO Bob Iger even referred to it as his main priority, and at the final earnings call for 2023, he shared a component of that streaming goal. He wanted to turn ESPN+ into the preeminent sports platform, and vocalized interest in a potential partnership with an outside company to make this happen. Now, Iger’s big plans for ESPN are coming to fruition. Let’s talk about it!
Disney announced on February 6th, 2024 that ESPN would soon merge with Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery to make a joint streaming platform for sports assets. The streaming bundle is currently unnamed, and will be available to those with ESPN+, Hulu, and Max subscribers. Each company will own one-third of the product.
This is super exciting for sports fans, as the streaming bundle will allow them to have all of their favorite sports available to view on one platform — with one subscription. Plus, Iger is still searching for strategic business partners for ESPN+, which could potentially include the NFL, NBA, and NHL. What a lot of fans are still wondering, though, is WHEN this product will be available.
Well, in the next few weeks, we can expect the companies to elect a Chief Executive of the service. After that, we’ll probably get a few more details from them. Disney said that the streaming service should then be available by fall 2024 via a new app.
Currently, no price has been announced for the service, but we’re hoping to hear more details at the quarterly earnings call that will take place on February 7th, 2024. Here, Disney shares all sorts of great information pertaining to the Company’s finances as well as exciting new project updates. It’s entirely possible that we’ll learn more about it then.
