As fans of 90s Disney animated shows, this Disney+ news is incredibly exciting!
Without a doubt, 90s kids were spoiled with timeless animated series rich in complex narrative and creative art styles. One of the best was Disney’s Gargoyles. Beloved by fans and critics alike, the often dark and underrated show has had potential new projects come and go over the years. Fortunately, we FINALLY have a major update on a NEW Gargoyles show coming to the 21st Century!
This week, it was announced that a new live-action remake of Gargoyles is in the works at Disney+. The series will be produced under iconic horror and Aquaman director James Wan’s Atomic Monster banner. Frequent Wan collaborator Gary Dauberman will serve as the showrunner.
With these two at the helm, we can certainly expect the Disney+ show to match the darker themes of the 90s animated classic. The animated series ran from 1994 to 1997 and was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation in collaboration with Tama Productions, Jade Animation, and Nelvana. Currently, you can find all three seasons streaming on Disney+.
The show centered on medieval Scottish gargoyles that turned to stone during the day. After a thousand years stuck in a petrified state, the gargoyles reawaken in modern-day (well, 90s modern day) New York City. At night, they take on the roles of secret nocturnal protectors, guarding humans from dark forces. Lauded for its Shakespearian themes, complex storytelling, and unique gothic aesthetic, Gargoyles has a cult following that has kept it in relevant conversation over the decades.
Disney has not announced a release date yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted when we know more about the Gargoyles live-action remake. Until then, keep it here at DFB for all the latest Disney+ and Disney news!
