Disney World certainly has no shortage of food — trust us, we’ve pretty much tried it all.
So when new foods come about, we make it a priority to test ’em out — you know, for science. Okay, we do it for you (and us) too! One of Disney World’s most underrated hotels has just rolled out a few new foods and we’re bringing you with us to check ’em out.
Come with us to Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort! We’re heading to Artist’s Palette, a counter-service restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
You’ll find sandwiches, salads, and more, and they recently rolled out a few new items we had to try — starting with the Beef on Weck Sandwich for $11.29.
This is a sliced brisket sandwich with horseradish cream on a caraway brioche bun served with Saratoga chips and au jus. Now, beef on weck is an iconic sandwich that originated in Buffalo, New York — not too far from the real Saratoga Springs. So we were interested to see if Disney could do it justice.
The brisket was tender and pulled apart easily — there wasn’t very much fat on the meat and it also had a light smoky taste which was a nice surprise. The horseradish sauce was a nice touch, but it didn’t have that bite you typically expect from horseradish — it kind of just tasted like mayonnaise.
The Saratoga chips are fairly standard and unsalted. They’re crispy and fine if you’re looking for a crunchy side with the sandwich. These were formerly “housemade” chips and we definitely preferred those. The au jus dip is served hot and there was plenty of it for the size of the sandwich, and was rich, salty, and had a Worcestershire sauce-like vibe to us.
Next, we tried the Derby Day Pie for $5.99. This is a walnut pecan pie with chocolate chips, salted caramel buttercream, and a horseshoe cookie — an iconic Kentucky staple.
This pie has all the makings of a standard derby pie but kicks up the presence with the salted buttercream and cute horseshoe cookie decoration on top. The walnuts are soft but have a nice resistance with each bite and the chocolate chips do a good job at adding the extra burst of sweetness against the walnut and pecan pie combo itself. While the buttercream isn’t found on a typical derby pie, this one doesn’t add much in the way of taste other than making it look pretty and adding a Disney flair to it. The horseshoe cookie is thin and sugary, so bland in the flavoring, but we appreciated that it wasn’t a straight sugar decoration like we’ve seen recently.
And of course, we had to grab the Artist’s Palette Cookie for $5.99 as well. This is a sugar cookie with colored frosting and single strawberry pocky stick. The cookie is a standard soft sugar cookie that you might get from your local grocery store. The theming is nice but the sugary icing is in small splotches to match the theming. The strawberry pocky stick adds an inventive touch to really drive home the theme — it’s a sugar cookie that’s slightly toasted on the underside but aside from the super cute theming, there’s nothing special about it, so we’d probably skip this one!
Will you be heading to Saratoga Springs to try these new items? We’ll be on the lookout for even more new Disney foods, so stay tuned to DFB for the latest!
