There is no question that Disney+ and Netflix directly compete with each other, but it didn’t start out that way.
Back when there was basically only one name in the streaming game, you could watch many Disney movies and series on Netflix.
You could watch the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and other live-action Disney franchises on Netflix, along with animated classics like Finding Nemo, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Lilo and Stitch, and even some Disney Channel shows.
But with the introduction of Disney+ in November 2019, many streaming users decided they needed both. Nearly four years later, the streaming services have gotten more expensive, and you may find yourself needing to cancel one of the other. How do you choose?
We’re breaking down the similarities and differences between Netflix and Disney+ to help you decide!
Pricing
First things first, price is probably going to factor into your decision in a big way. In July 2023, the U.S. pricing for Netflix is:
- Standard with ads: $6.99 per month
- Basic: $9.99 per month
- Standard: $15.49 per month
- Premium: $19.99 per month
Several cell phone and cable TV providers offer packages that include Netflix at a discounted price — so you may want to check with yours before subscribing!
And U.S. pricing for Disney+ is:
- Basic (with ads): $7.99 per month
- Premium: $10.99 per month
Disney+ can be bundled with Hulu and/or ESPN+ for a higher monthly fee, but more streaming services.
Sharing
Netflix has explicitly stated that a Netflix account is for use by one household. Account holders who have shared their account with others who do not live in the same household have been receiving notifications from Netflix that they need to cut those folks off or add another household to their account for $7.99 per month.
So far, we have not seen a similar crackdown with Disney+ — but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen at some point in the future.
