Avatar fans have waited for YEARS for a sequel to the hit groundbreaking movie by James Cameron. Now, that its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water has released, we’ve seen just how much demand there is for this franchise.
We’ve seen changes made in the Disney Parks to celebrate the sequel’s release, including new foods added to Satu’li Canteen in Pandora in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. There has been a lot of talk about changing one of the Avatar-themed rides there to align with the new film. Disneyland even has plans to build a new Avatar-themed experience. Avatar: The Way of Water, though, shows no signs of stopping because it’s still breaking box office records!
A month ago, we reported that Avatar: The Way of Water had grossed $1.928 billion globally, surpassing Spider-Man: No Way Home as the sixth highest-grossing film in history. Well, the movie just keeps going up that list because now it’s the THIRD highest-grossing movie of all time! THIRD.
According to Variety, the Avatar sequel has generated $2.2433 billion globally and has now passed Titanic to become the third highest-grossing movie of all time. Both movies were directed by James Cameron, making him the only filmmaker EVER to have three movies gross $2 billion or more. The only two movies now standing in the sequel’s way are the first Avatar film (which made $2.92 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion).
Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice Pro said, “James Cameron just continues to chase himself on the box office charts. He clearly knows how to engage a modern audience.”
Avatar: The Way of Water cost about $460 million to produce and promote, making it one of the most expensive films ever made. The film has stayed in the top five on box office charts ever since its release in December 2022. A third movie is set for release in 2024, with a fourth and fifth planned after that.
We’ll continue to keep an eye on the success of Avatar: The Way of Water as it continues its climb up the top-grossing movies of all time. Stay tuned to DFB for more.
