Happy Year of the Rabbit, everyone! We’re celebrating the Lunar New Year in Disneyland!
As you may know, every year, Disneyland has a special Lunar New Year Festival at Disney California Adventure, and that festival means that not only do we get to see some FUN Lunar New Year merchandise, but we also get to eat some AMAZING food at the festival’s food booths! We’re heading over to the Lucky 8 Lantern booth now to check things out!
Menu
Okay, so what’s so exciting about the menu at Lucky 8 Lantern this year is that EVERYTHING is new and we have a little bit of everything here: a little bit of savory, a little bit of sweet, and drinks!
So let’s dive in and check out all this new food!
Eats
Yes, we grabbed all THREE items from this booth!
Our first stop at Disneyland Resort's #LunarNewYear Festival is Lucky 8 Lantern! 🏮
– Quesabirria Eggroll for $9.00
– Mandarin Mousse Cake for $6.25
– Coconut-Lavender Matcha Foam Iced Coffee for $6.50! pic.twitter.com/rgKA31Bhvs— Disney Food Blog (@DisneyFoodBlog) January 20, 2023
Okay, let’s start with the savory option here, the Quesabirria Eggroll with Guajillo pepper consommé filled with Oaxaca cheese, beef birria, and a side of guajillo pepper consommé for $9. We liked this, although the beef birria was a little dry. However, it was fine once we dipped our eggroll in the sauce.
We didn’t get much of a cheese taste with this, although that ingredient is in the description. Side note: get napkins because it IS a little greasy. Overall, though, the flavors were great!
Now for something a little sweet. We’re digging into the Mandarin Mousse Cake for $6.25. It’s made with layers of mandarin mousse with vanilla cake and clementine compote finished with white chocolate crunch balls and a tangerine glaze. For starters, this is a GORGEOUS cake.
BUT it only tasted okay — we were a little weirded out by that jelly texture on the outside. The flavors of the mousse also seemed artificial. We will say the cake was spongey and soft, though.
We were left wondering, though, where are the white chocolate crunch balls? We didn’t see them on ours!
Let's take a closer look at that new Mandarin Mousse Cake 🍊 at Lucky 8 Lantern!

Okay, on to beverages!
Drinks
Need a quick pick-me-up? You can grab the Coconut-Lavender Matcha Foam Iced Coffee for $6.50. It’s made with Joffrey’s Coffee & Tea Co. French Bistro Blend, coconut milk, coconut cream, and white chocolate sauce garnished with lavender matcha, coconut foam, sea salt, and purple sanding sugar.
Our reporter isn’t a big coffee OR matcha fan, so they didn’t really LOVE this drink. Both are acquired tastes, though, so this drink might be perfect for all the matcha fans out there (and that matcha flavor IS strong). You do get some nice notes from the coconut and lavender.
Note that you can also get the Lotus Flower Glow Cube here for $6.25.
Overall
Overall, about the only thing we really liked here was the eggroll, so if you’re going to get anything at this booth, get that. If YOU do love coffee and matcha, though, the drink could be a hit with you, although it wasn’t for us. There are probably going to be booths at the festival with stronger offerings, though.
We’re making our way around ALL the food booths at the Lunar New Year Festival, so keep checking back with us for more reviews!
