What if we told you there was a Disney restaurant located inside a cavern on a Mysterious Island?
There is — and it’s just as awesome as it sounds. Over at Tokyo DisneySea, Vulcania Restaurant serves as the “geothermal power station” for Captain Nemo’s scientific base, and it also serves up some pretty delicious grub. Come with us to check it out!
Atmosphere
Our friend Heather Sievers from Dining in Disney visited Vulcania Restaurant and shared everything we needed to know. Heather noted that while she only got a few snacks to try from this spot, they were so good she wants to have a full meal at Vulcania next time around!
Vulcania Restaurant features cafeteria-style service, so once you enter you’ll hop in line to grab your food!
The restaurant is designed to look like the inside of a cave, and is home to the geothermal power station that powers Captain Nemo’s base. Nemo and his crew needed a place to eat, and so Vulcania Restaurant was born. You’ll find plenty of seating, and when we visited there were still plexiglass barriers up separating the tables.
Plenty of Cast Members are located around to help bus your table or grab you anything you might need!
While this Mysterious Island cavern setting is pretty cool, we wanted to know if the food was just as impressive!
Menu
Vulcania features primarily Chinese-inspired dishes and dim sum or small plates. Since this is a cafeteria-style restaurant, you can add the items you like to your plate, and skip whatever you don’t want! Each item is priced a la carte so you don’t wind up paying for anything you won’t like.
There are quite a few different hot dishes on the menu, like soups, stir-fries, vegetables, egg rolls, and more.
You’ll also find fried chicken and various wok-fried items to choose from as well!
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Disney restaurant without some different dessert options! When we visited, there was an Almond Jelly, Mango Pudding, Halloween Special Dessert, and a…house salad? Okay, maybe not a dessert but you can get that here too!
So, how did any of this food actually taste?!
Eats
Luckily, the food was just as impressive as the restaurant’s decor. We tried the spring rolls which were warm, fresh, and had a really great umami flavor. The outside was nice and crispy while the filling was well cooked without being too mushy.
We also had to check out the fried rice, and we’re glad we did. We weren’t expecting much from a bowl of plain fried rice, but the soy and ginger flavors came through and blended nicely with the other elements of the dish.
While we didn’t try the house salad, we wanted to show how adorable it and the desserts are at Vulcania. Would you just look at that Mickey-shaped egg yolk?!
The almond jelly features a little Mickey head…
…and Donald Duck is chilling in the mango pudding!
We did try the Halloween Special Dessert, but overall didn’t find it to be anything special. It was a fun combination of dessert samplings, but each dessert was pretty bland and didn’t wow us as much as the fried rice or spring rolls did.
Next time we’ll have to try that Donald Duck mango pudding!
Overall
Vulcania Restaurant is a great cafeteria-style spot that’s quick and has some yummy eats. While we didn’t eat a full meal here, the snacks we did try made us want to come back for more!
