Over the past few days, we’ve seen Hurricane Ian strengthen to a massive storm and get closer and closer to Florida.
Disney World, SeaWorld, Universal Orlando, and more have announced closures, and we’re sharing updates on what it’s like to be in Orlando ahead of the storm. Now we’ve got an update on another thing being impacted by the Hurricane.
Brightline has sent out a notice sharing that their rail service will be operating on a modified schedule with only 12 departures on Wednesday, September 28th. For those who may not be aware, Brightline is the company that’ll eventually have a train that’ll connect Miami to the Orlando International Airport. The station at Orlando Airport’s Terminal C is set to open in 2023.
Ultimately, the Brightline train is set to go from the Orlando Airport on a path by Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe and then to a station “near” (but not at) Disney World. The train station that was supposed to be at Disney Springs has been canceled, but Brightline expects to still build a station near the resort.
For now, Brightline’s stations in West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and MiamiCentral will be open with only essential guest services. Onboard service and baggage service won’t be available, but there will be a train attendant onboard for guest safety.
You can head to the Brightline website to see their departure schedule and see what will be happening today. For example, it lists some departures from Fort Lauderdale to Miami today, but others have already been canceled for this afternoon.
We also saw that some train trips from Fort Lauderdale to Miami for the 29th had already been canceled as well.
In addition to making some changes to their train schedule, Brightline has temporarily stopped all construction activities in South Florida and Central Florida throughout various counties including Orange County (where part of Disney World is located).
They shared, “All upcoming work, including closures at railroad crossings, will be postponed until the storm has passed and work can safely resume.”
Some railroad crossings under construction will remain closed during the storm, but detours will stay in place. Check out the details below:
Indian River County
- Vero Beach – Railroad Crossing at 12th St. — Currently closed. To remain closed through storm and will reopen once work can be completed.
- Vero Beach – Railroad Crossing at Oslo Rd. — Currently closed. To remain closed through storm and will reopen once work can be completed.
Palm Beach County
- Boca Raton – Railroad Crossing at NW 2nd St. — Currently closed. To remain closed through storm and will reopen once work can be completed. Eastbound NW 2nd St. will remain open to access NW 1st Ave.
Miami-Dade County
- Miami – W. Dixie Highway / Harriet Tubman Highway between NE 202nd St. and NE 195th St. — Full road closure through October 2022.
Hurricane Ian has made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 and is set to impact much of the state.
