Over the past few years, the airline industry has faced a lot of challenges.
Now, with summer travel picking up to pre-pandemic levels, airlines and airports are having problems keeping up. A pilot shortage, along with weather issues, and more, are causing multiple flight delays and cancellations. With Orlando International Airport being the busiest in the U.S., it’s seen its share of delays, including a HUGE amount this summer.
The delays have been so problematic at Orlando International Airport that CNN ranked the airport in the top 10 list of global airports with the most summer delays. Note that Orlando International Airport is the ONLY U.S. airport on this list. The FlightAware data used to rank airports covers the period of summer travel from May 26th through July 19th.
So what does that tell us? Well, if you’re traveling to Disney World, it might be best to prepare for delays and cancellations and have a flexible travel plan. As they often say: expect the best, but prepare for the worst. You could also travel to Disney World by other means — did you know there’s another airport in Orlando? Although it’s not QUITE as convenient, you could book a flight into Orlando Sanford International Airport instead.
Another option is to drive to Disney World, if that’s available to you. Make it a family road trip — you could even plan to play Disney-themed games along the way. Sure, gas isn’t exactly cheap right now, but driving does give you the ability to have more control over when you arrive in Disney World.
So let’s say you DO decide to fly into Orlando International Airport. We recommend making yourself familiar with Disney World’s cancellation policies, just in case. You’ll also want to be familiar with your airline’s cancellation policies. Here are more details on what you need to do if your flight to Disney World gets canceled.
