Disney doesn’t really have a hard time dominating the box office.
With properties like Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and more, many of the most successful movies at the box office have been Disney movies. Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home has been doing incredibly well at the box office, and the movie just broke a major record that was previously held by another Disney property.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has officially unseated James Cameron’s 2009 movie Avatar to become the 3rd-highest grossing domestic box office release in history, according to Variety.
The Marvel movie has collected a total of $760.988 million so far (according to Deadline), bumping down Avatar and its $760.5 million to 4th place at the North American box office.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has been enjoying an incredible run since premiering in December of 2021. Its domestic box office ticket sales are 3 times more than the next highest-grossing movie of the pandemic era, which is Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with $224 million, according to Variety.
So, can Spidey catch up to the top 2 highest grossing movies on the domestic box office list? Well, it would take a lot. No Way Home would have to make an additional $100 million in ticket sales to catch up to the number 2 spot, which is Avengers: Endgame with $858 million. And, in the number 1 spot is Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $936 million, so it’s unlikely Spider-Man will get up to those numbers, especially in the middle of a global pandemic when not as many people are going to the theaters.
“Though Spider-Man: No Way Home benefits from a much higher average ticket price than Avatar, this does not detract from the enormity of this achievement coming during a pandemic-impacted marketplace…It would have been unimaginable just a few months ago to think that the latest Spider-Man film would even have a shot a leapfrogging over Avatar, which has been a mainstay on box office Mt. Olympus for over a decade,” saysPaul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst with Comscore, according to Variety.
Globally, Spider-Man: No Way Home is the 6th-highest grossing movie of all time with $1.8 billion. The top 5 spots belong to Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avatar, and Titanic, which have each made over $2 billion in worldwide box office sales. No Way Home doesn’t have a release date in China, and without the country’s ticket sales, it might be unrealistic for Spidey to cross the $2 billion mark, according to Variety.
But, Spider-Man: No Way Home still has plenty of accomplishments to be proud of, like the 2nd-biggest domestic debut in history with $260 million in ticket sales, as well as the 3rd-largest global debut with $600 million, both in the opening weekend alone.
