REVIEW: One of Our All-Time FAVORITE Treats Got a 50th Anniversary Makeover in Disney World

We’ve been eating our way around Disney World trying some of their 150 new bites and sips!

Contempo Cafe is home to some of our favorite sweets, so our expectations were high when we learned that they would be serving up TWO new desserts for Disney World’s 50th Anniversary Celebration!

First up is the 50th Anniversary Peanut Butter-Banana Pie. The Peanut Butter Pie at Disney’s Contemporary Resort has been one of our favorite treats for a long time, and it got some 50th Anniversary updates for the occasion! We were a little concerned going into this one because we really didn’t want one of our favorite desserts to get too many changes.

Peanut Butter -Banana Pie

This is a sweet tart shell filled with peanut butter mousse and banana sauce, topped with chocolate glaze and chocolate décor in the form of a 50th medallion, edible glitter, and chocolate curls. The dessert used to have a mound of peanut butter cream cheese on top, but now the peanut butter is inside the tart shell, replacing the vanilla cream that used to be there. There’s also a new banana sauce layered with the peanut butter and a chocolate ganache on top. The frosting spikes on top are peanut butter cream cheese, so we didn’t lose too much of the peanut butter flavor!

Here’s the Inside

Honestly, we don’t love that Disney is messing with one of our favorite desserts. We were very concerned when we didn’t see the peanut butter cream cheese mound on top (like it is on the old dessert). But since the flavors are still there both inside the tart and on top, it wasn’t as bad as we thought. We do miss the vanilla custard, and although we liked the new decorations on top, we still prefer the old version to this one. This is a dessert for people who love rich, heavy treats — and you have to love peanut butter to enjoy it! If you’re looking for something fruity and light, this treat will not do it for ya.

And if your sweet tooth isn’t already satisfied, you can also pick up their 50th Anniversary German Chocolate Cupcake. This decadent-sounding dessert is a chocolate cupcake filled with German chocolate filling and topped with buttercream. For decorations, there’s a chocolate Disney’s Contemporary Resort 50th Anniversary piece and a white chocolate curl.

The German chocolate filling has caramel and coconut flavors and nuts. The buttercream is an orange color with blue running through it because we can’t forget that EARidescent theme for the 50th Anniversary. But the colors together make it look more like a citrus-y or summer-flavored cupcake, so that might fool you if you don’t know what to expect. Don’t be deceived! It’s actually a very rich German chocolate treat.

Here’s the Back

We thought this cupcake was the best new treat at Contempo Cafe. The cake was dark chocolate, and it was very flavorful. The coconut caramel filling inside kept it nice and moist. The buttercream on top is a little more substantial than most of the frostings we’ve had here, and we liked that the blue sugar crystals around the base gave it a little more texture. It was a VERY sweet treat, even for those of us with a sweet tooth!

Inside the German Chocolate Cupcake

This is a great dessert for the chocolate fans out there! The cake was delicious, and we loved all the different textures. But if you don’t like sweet treats or lots of icing, maybe try a different dessert here instead. There are nuts and coconut in this dessert, so be aware of that if you have any allergies.
