We’ve probably watched Cruella AT LEAST five times since the live-action origin film made its debut on Disney+ and in theaters.
As the parks have been celebrating with treats, merchandise, and photo-ops around the parks, fans of the “brilliant, bad, and a little bit mad” villain can also take a peek behind-the-scenes of the making of the film!
Spoilers ahead for Disney’s Cruella!
Yahoo has given Cruella fans a closer look at the estate that was used as “Hellman Hall” in the recent live-action film! The real location’s name is Englefield House, which is located in the English countryside. Englefield House was transformed to fit the tastes of Baroness von Hellman before the house later went to heiress Cruella, becoming “Hell Hall” instead.
The house has appeared in a variety of other films and shows, including X-Men: First Class, Black Mirror, and The King’s Speech. Alice Felton, the film’s set decorator, noted that some original elements of the estate were kept in the film, like “the books and some of the amazing antiquities in the house.” Still, in order to fit the 1970’s era that Cruella is set in, surrounding vintage shops, markets, and prop houses were a go-to in London and other towns.
Felton noted that “We wanted a house that felt like it was a grand country house that would make a big impression on young Estella when she arrives with her mother. It needed to look wild and huge with the sea crashing on the rocks below.” In order to show off the lavish parties that the Baroness would hold, the exterior was redecorated to fit the tastes of the character. Felton provided the details that “We added a canopy to one side of the house, as we needed to see guests going into the parties, and there wasn’t a grand entrance there. We used flowers and huge drapes in different themes for both of the events.”
The inside even received a makeover to fit with the Baroness’s world-renowned style. When Felton and her team were working to create the environment of Hellman Hall, they mainly used “a mix of period-traditional style, with hints of the 1950s and 1960s.” This was done by the designers as they “would use a traditional piece of furniture and upholster it in a modern fabric.” Drapes and cushions were matched to one another as the addition of “more modern drapes and smaller props, like vases and flowers, that would be more contemporary” were styled in the residence.
