Happy end of May!
Last month was a BUSY one in Disney World: we saw big changes to mask policies, social distancing, park capacity, and so much more. But did you know that a weird weather situation was goin’ on, too?
If you were in the Orlando area in May, you may have noticed that the typical rain…wasn’t there. While we certainly had our fair share of gloomy weather, it didn’t even come close to normal!
Well, according to the Orlando Sentinel, that’s because Orlando just set the record for the driest May in recorded history (that’s 129 years!). The city received 0.17 inches of rain, compared to the May average of 4.02 inches. The previous record was 0.43 inches, way back in 1961.
So…what happened? The National Weather Service explained that Orlando was just “unlucky” with rain clouds last month. There were only 3 measurable days of rain throughout all of May, and the rainiest day left just 0.13 inches! However, other cities in the area got a perfectly fine amount of precipitation.
This dry May means the start of the rainy season was pushed back — more rainfall will need to come soon to avoid signs of drought. However, Orlando’s average rainfall in June is 8.05 inches, making it the rainiest month of the year. So we could expect precipitation to ramp up quite a bit in the next few weeks!
If you’re visiting Disney World in June, expect a rainy month as that wet season finally hits. You can also check in with us for our weekly weather updates before or during your vacation. And as always, stay tuned to DFB for more Disney news!
