Face masks have been required in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney District since it reopened in 2020 after the historic park closures.

Over time, some of those policies have been updated. Now, as Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park reopened at the end of April 2021, we’re taking a look at Disneyland’s current face mask policies so you can be best prepared for your visit. [PLEASE NOTE: This post has been continually updated with the current face mask policies since it was originally published.]

California state officials previously announced that they would be instituting a “universal indoor mask mandate, effective Wednesday, December 15.” The mask mandate was originally announced to last through January 15th, 2022, but was extended through February 15, 2022. The indoor mask mandate ended on February 16th, 2022.

On February 15, 2022, Disney announced that as of February 17th, face masks are only required for unvaccinated guests in indoor locations in Disneyland Resort. In other words, face masks are optional indoors for those who are fully vaccinated. Outdoors, face coverings are optional for all guests.

As of April 24 2022, the following verbiage regarding masks appears on the Disneyland website: “The State of California strongly recommends that all Guests be fully vaccinated or obtain a negative COVID-19 test prior to entering the Disneyland Resort. It is strongly recommended that Guests wear face coverings when indoors and in enclosed transportation. Face coverings are required for all Guests (ages 2 and older), regardless of vaccination status, in certain indoor health settings, such as in First Aid. Face coverings are optional for Guests in outdoor areas.”

Previously, face coverings were only optional at all indoor and outdoor locations, including throughout indoor attractions and indoor queues, but were still required when riding on most Disney transportation. Keep in mind that face masks are still required in certain indoor locations, including First Aid. So, you will still want to have a face mask handy when you’re visiting just in case.

We are keeping the original measures and information on face coverings in this post from March 2021 below, as the information regarding types of masks remains current. 

When Disney’s California theme parks reopened, there were several new health and safety policies in place, which we’d generally seen implemented in Disney World as well. Park Reservations are required to enter the theme parks, and masks are required. (Originally,  there were temperature screenings as well; however, those ended on June 15th).

Let’s break down the mask requirements.

What type of mask do guests need to wear? You can wear a disposable or reusable mask, but all face coverings must:

• Be made with at least 2 layers of breathable material
• Fully cover the nose and mouth and secure under the chin
• Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
• Be secured with ties or ear loops and allow the Guest to remain hands-free

Just as Disney had shared previously for its rules regarding masks in Downtown Disney, in the Disneyland Resort theme parks, neck gaiters, open-chin triangle bandanas, and face coverings containing valves, mesh material or holes of any kind will NOT be considered acceptable face coverings.

Additionally, costume masks are not considered appropriate and are prohibited from being worn.

What about masks with a transparent panel? Again, we’ve already seen this rule shared on the Disneyland Resort website, but we’re going over it now as it will now apply to the theme parks when they reopen. Face coverings with an integrated transparent plastic panel over the mouth area are acceptable BUT those types of face coverings must:

• Consist of a fabric face covering featuring a solid plastic panel containing no openings that is attached to the fabric on all sides using tight knit stitching
• Meet all of Disney’s other face covering requirements that we previously mentioned

Also, Disneyland’s website notes that the use of a mask is not a substitute for social distancing. Guests must still maintain an appropriate distance from others.

Again, we’ve seen these rules on the Disneyland website before, but since they now apply to the reopening of Disneyland’s theme parks, and not just the Downtown Disney District, we wanted to review them in advance of your next trip.
