Will 2021 be a year of EPIC Disney cupcakes? We’re not sure but we have already tried quite a few fun cupcakes lately.

We got to taste the 2021 cupcake at the end of 2020, and recently munched on a pineapple cupcake, and a butterfinger cupcake. And today, as we made our way around Disney’s Animal Kingdom we saw that a DFB favorite cupcake has made its way BACK to the park with a new filling!

The Cotton-Top Tamarin cupcake has been something we’ve talked about for a LONG time here at DFB. The cupcake previously had a different look, but it got quite the makeover in early 2020. If you’re not familiar with this treat, it’s a cupcake that celebrates and reminds us of the Cotton-Top Tamarin — an endangered species of squirrel-sized monkeys who make their habitat only in northwest Colombia.

When we tried this cupcake back in early 2020 it was missing its signature white and dark chocolate Tamarin head shape on the top, but was still as tasty as ever! The treat at that time was made with chocolate cake with chocolate filling, topped with a buttercream frosting and chocolate pearls. Today, we found the treat again in Disney’s Animal Kingdom with essentially the same look from early 2020 but a NEW caramel filling and caramel buttercream.

To be exact, the treat is now made of a chocolate cake with chocolate caramel ganache filling, salted caramel buttercream, green buttercream leaves, crispy chocolate pearls, and a white chocolate Tamarin topper.

There’s no denying our Cotton-Top friend is adorable on top, but how does this slightly revamped cupcake taste? Overall, we thought the cupcake tasted really fresh, and there was a great ratio of filling to cake to frosting. The salted caramel frosting was a great touch.

The caramel filling was really rich, so we were glad there wasn’t TOO much in there or it would have overpowered the treat. It’s a VERY sweet cupcake, and possibly too sweet for some. So, if you don’t like super sweet treats or if you’re not a chocolate and caramel fan, this might be a skip for you.

If you do like really sweet treats, this might be something you really like, but you may still want to consider sharing it with your family to help spread the sweetness around. Overall, we think those who love chocolate and caramel (and love Cotton-Top Tamarins) will really enjoy this treat!
