We’re totally fine with Disney rolling out the holiday treats early. We already had a Valentine’s Day Red Hot Cinnamon Cupcake that was the bomb dot com.
We noticed that another Valentine’s treat has arrived a month and a half in advance. The crowd-favorite Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream Sandwich is back for the most romantic time of the year. But. Um. It’s not quite what we remember.
Judging from the Dino-Bite Snacks menu, we could see that the cookie sandwich looks a little different in 2021. It still comes stuffed with strawberry ice cream full of strawberries and strawberry and vanilla cake crumbs, but visually this new one is a trip. When we got our sandwich, it wasn’t exactly like the picture.
First, let’s compare to the LAST time we enjoyed this treat:
This time, instead of a light dusting of sprinkles…this thing was COVERED in red. We couldn’t tell where the cookie ended and the sprinkles began. It reminded many of us of a certain snack that we enjoy typically NOT on ice cream — Flamin’ Hot Cheetos?!
Looks aside, we have to give it the benefit of the doubt. We really loved last year’s version and wanted to see if it measures up. The strawberry ice cream is really what makes this dessert awesome. We LOVE that there are fresh strawberries mixed in here. It makes the authentic strawberry taste stand out and not taste terribly artificial. We’re a big fan of ice cream cookie sandwiches and this experience was no different! It’s STILL super good, guys!
The sugar cookies were really soft and chewy. This makes it easier to eat like a sandwich as opposed to chomping through two crispy cookies. Those boatloads of sugar sprinkles are on BOTH sides of the cookies and they’re totally crusted in them. Sugar sprinkle overload, guys. The Cheeto-looking crumbs on the ice cream is thankfully just VERY red-dyed cake crumbs. It tastes like an infinitely better version of those Strawberry Shortcake ice cream bars you’d get from the ice cream man.
We will say this treat is a total mess! We were covered in red sprinkles and our hands are a lil’ stained red but WORTH. IT. You might want to skip this treat if you don’t want to dig into a messy snack or like the taste of strawberries! It’s very strawberry forward (a pro in our book!).
Overall, it’s a delish treat and definitely shareable. You get two cookies, ice cream, and a boatload of sprinkles for $6.99. As always, we’ll be back to review more treats so stay tuned!
