For those of us who have been anxiously awaiting the reopening of Tokyo Dining in Disney World, we have some exciting menu news to share! Unless of course you were particularly attached to ramen, in which case…brace yourself.
The Japanese restaurant in Epcot’s World Showcase has remained closed, but with a BUNCH of new menu tweaks, we’re crossing our fingers — and our chopsticks! — that a reopening is imminent!
We’re big fans of Tokyo Dining for its pristine sushi and warming miso soup. Yes, even in the Florida humidity, miso soup hits the spot! And as one of the remaining holdouts for reopening, we’ve DEFINITELY had a hankering!
Whether or not the lunch and dinner restaurant is indeed gearing up to return soon, they’ve made some pretty MAJOR menu changes that seems they’re whittling things down. Which makes sense if they’re preparing to operate with limited capacity and customers!
Across the board, for both lunch and dinner menus, selections from appetizers, sushi, and desserts have been reduced, and here’s the shocker: they’ve done away with ramen — and noodles in general — entirely! Also, no children’s meals or Bento Boxes! Pause for audible gasp!
For starters, it looks like they’re focusing on lighter, healthier fare, as Tokyo Dining has done away with fried appetizers (say bye bye to Spicy Calamari Tempura, Chicken Karaage, and Adedashi Tofu) and swapped in a delicious-sounding Salmon Poke Bowl with sushi rice, cubed salmon, ikura (aka that boba-looking salmon roe), cucumber, wasabi dressing, pickled ginger, and furikake, an umami-rich Japanese seasoning.
There’s also the Sunomono Salad, which is their take on seaweed salad dressed with sesame seeds and pickled cucumbers. And that miso soup we’ve been hankering for? They’ve replaced the vegetable and clam versions with a single version made with tofu and green onion for!
Sushi selections have also changed a LOT! Items missing are the Eel Nigiri and ALL the Classic Rolls! Instead, they’re concentrating on four Specialty Rolls, including altered versions of the Volcano Roll, which now features yellowtail, salmon, smelt roe, arare crunch, and spicy mayo, compared to the previous version with shrimp, scallops, and Volcano sauce.
The Spicy Crunchy Roll, California Roll, and Vegetable Roll remain, but the Rainbow Roll, Sunshine Salmon Roll, Citrus Shrimp Roll, and Yuzu Ginger Beef Roll are no more! For sashimi, the Fresh Sashimi Sampler now has tuna, salmon, and yellowtail, and there’s five pieces of Bluefin Tuna!
Since Tokyo Dining is clearly all about sushi nowadays, that means the cooked entrees, in addition to those dearly departed noodles, are also gone! So…no more Vegetable Tempura plates, Teriyaki Butter Grilled Chicken, Wasabi Shrimp, or Japanese-Style Sirloin!
Lastly, for dessert, it’s time for a mousse makeover! What was once Green Tea Mousse or Ginger Mousse Cake is now a Mango Mousse Cake with mango-flavored sponge cake, mango mousse filling, and mango glaze. Suffice to say, it’s mango-tastic!
There’s also a Chocolate Tofu Mousse, made with creamy dark chocolate and silken tofu with white chocolate and strawberry! And while the Soft-Serve Ice Cream is off the menu, you can fill the void with Matcha Tiramisu, which has green tea cream, raspberry, and cake-y Baumkuchen.
As sushi-lovers, we’re THRILLED to see some of these fresh changes! Although we will miss the ramen and bento boxes, we’ll just have to wait until they open to taste the new items for ourselves! We will continue to keep you updated on the latest menu changes in Disney World.
