Mayor Demings Says Orange County Hotels May Be Used as Emergency Housing for Hurricane Isaias

As Hurricane Isaias takes aim at Florida’s east coast, the state is preparing for the arrival of the storm.

While Orange County officials aren’t expecting to feel much of the impact from Hurricane Isaias in the area, they’ve said they’re still prepared to weather the storm. Orange County is included in the state-of-emergency order issued by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

In a Friday press conference, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said he believes the county is well prepared for the storm. He also said if residents of coastal counties evacuate, hotels in Orange County can take them in.

Quoting figures from Visit Orlando, Mayor Demings said about 84% of hotels are open and only about 32% of rooms are occupied.

As of Saturday morning, Hurricane Isaias is on track to skirt up Florida’s east coast as early as Saturday evening.
