Since their introduction back in 2024, Lightning Lanes have become integral to experiencing Walt Disney World’s theme parks, including the Magic Kingdom.
However, if you’re going to use Disney’s latest skip-the-line system at the “Most Magical Place on Earth”, there is a strategy you need to keep in mind when booking any of the three types of Lightning Lanes.
“Wait, what are the three types of Lightning Lanes? “
Alright, before we get to the Magic Kingdom, first let’s run through the basics of how Lightning Lanes work. There are three primary types of Lightning Lanes available at Walt Disney World:
- Lightning Lane Multi Pass allows guests to plan ahead of their visit and choose up to 3 Multi Pass experiences and arrival windows in a theme park (7 days in advance of their stay for Disney hotel guests and 3 days in advance for non-hotel guests).
- Lightning Lane Single Pass allows guests to “Save time in line with a Lightning Lane Single Pass for one of our most in-demand attractions—those not available with Lightning Lane Multi Pass.” Single Passes are eligible to be purchased at the same time as their Multi Pass equivalents.
- Lightning Lane Premier Pass “allows one-time entry to each Lightning Lane experience in a theme park—to enjoy at your leisure that day,” which can once again be purchased beginning in the same purchase window.
In other words, for every level of Lightning Lane, Walt Disney World hotel guests have a four-day head start in booking Lightning Lanes, which can be a game-changer, especially for the always busy Magic Kingdom.
Booking Your Lightning Lanes
Alright, now that that’s clear, let’s talk about what to do when your 7 or 3-day out Lightning Lane window opens. First, let’s talk Single Pass. Two Magic Kingdom attractions — Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and TRON Lightcycle / Run — are eligible for Single Pass.
Next up, let’s talk Multi Pass. When purchasing a Lightning Lane Multi Pass for Magic Kingdom, you’ll be able to choose* one experience from this Tier 1 group:
- Jungle Cruise
- Peter Pan’s Flight
- Space Mountain
- Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
You can then choose two – or all three if you so choose – from the following Tier 2 group:
- The Barnstormer
- Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
- Dumbo the Flying Elephant
- Haunted Mansion
- “it’s a small world”
- Mad Tea Party
- The Magic Carpets of Aladdin
- The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
- Mickey’s PhilharMagic
- Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- Tomorrowland Speedway
- Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid
Which Rides to Choose?
So, which rides should you choose? Well, for your Tier 1 attraction, our experts would definitely suggest either the Jungle Cruise or Peter Pan’s Flight, as both of those classic attractions still draw long lines and have limited capacity and slow load times that make standby times longer.
When it comes to your Tier 2 Lightning Lanes, there are a few directions to go. Let’s start with Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. In the past, this attraction may not have been “worth” a Lightning lane.
However, after reopening following long refurbishment, the attraction features new ride vehicles, new blasters, new changing targets, and a new opening scene complete with original character Buddy. The changes have led to a surge in popularity for the ride, and vaulted it into being “worthy” of Lightning Lane Multi Pass use for the time being.
For your second Tier 2 Lightning Lane, you arguably shouldn’t “waste” Lightning Lanes on attractions with ride systems that allow high hourly throughput like Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, or “it’s a small world.” However, this is an exception here: You can use them as “burner” Lightning Lanes.
What’s a Burner Lightning Lane?
You see, once you tap into your very first Lightning Lane of the day, the tier rules disappear entirely. That means you can potentially hold three Tier 1 selections at the same time if you play it right.
The move is to pre-book one of your three selections on a ride you can hop on first thing in the morning, use it right when you walk in, and let that tap-in unlock the full menu for the rest of the day. And honestly, you don’t have to settle for a ride you’re indifferent about. For example, if you can snag a slot on the aforementioned Haunted Mansion early enough, that’s actually one of our favorite burner picks. It’s popular enough that using it doesn’t feel like a throwaway, and it still frees you up to stack more Tier 1 rides as the day goes on.
Day-Of Tips
Now, you’ve arrived at the Magic Kingdom with your Lightning Lanes – including a “burner” Lightning Lane ready to go. What other daily tips do we have for you? Here are a few of our favorites:
- A Longer Window: While your reservation will show as “expired” in the My Disney Experience app after that one-hour window, you actually have up to THREE HOURS to redeem it. That’s right – three full hours, which leads us to Stacking.
- Stacking: Once the first hour of your current Lightning Lane window passes, the app treats it as used for the purposes of booking your next one. That means you don’t have to actually tap in before grabbing your next selection. Meaning you can be holding two selections at once without doing anything sketchy.
- Keep Checking: Not seeing the Lightning Lane options you were hoping for? This is where our second tip comes in: Refresh the Lightning Lane page on the Disney World app throughout the day. You can use this method after you have made all of your initial selections and confirmed your purchase. This tip can help you find better times for attractions that you have already booked. From the main screen, tap on the selection you are looking to modify the time for and then select “Modify Plan” in the pop-up. You will then be taken to a screen where you can modify the experience by either picking a new time or picking a new experience. On this page, select whatever time the app gives you to modify the selection to (even if it is much later). Then, you will be taken to a screen to review the details of your selection. On this page, find the attraction again, and you will see a “Modify Time” option in blue text. Click on this to see a list of available times. If you’re still not seeing an ideal time, you can repeatedly click “Close” and then “Modify Time” again to refresh the available times. Your selections are only saved for five minutes, but you can continue to refresh the available times, and if the five minutes run out, you can simply back out and come back in.
Next time you’re headed to the Magic Kingdom, make sure to have your Lightning Lane strategy picked out beforehand and stay tuned to DFB for more Disney tips.
