The Disney Destiny has officially begun setting sail from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for 4 and 5-night cruises to The Bahamas and Western Caribbean, and with a brand new ship comes new experiences to check out!
One of the new lounges on board is none other than The Sanctum, which is a lounge completely themed to Dr. Strange from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s home to TONS of specialty drinks that are beyond photogenic, a snack we can’t get enough of, and so many small details you won’t want to miss. Before you head into The Sanctum for the first time, we think there are a few things you need to know about!
Allow Some Time to Experience It All
When we got to experience the Disney Destiny, it was on the media cruise, so things may have changed since our cruise, but something we did notice was that, in addition to the bar, there were about 12-15 tables in the lounge. However, there were only two servers for all those tables, so our server did take a little bit to get to us.
Which we totally understood! It wasn’t her fault at all, and she was working SO hard, but if this hasn’t changed, you may find that this experience takes a little longer than you first expected. It gives you lots of time to really take in all the details of the lounge, which has so many hidden aspects, we appreciated the time to really look around.
Speaking of Those Details…
While we’re on the topic of details in this lounge, it’s FULL of them. If you’ve seen the Marvel films with Dr. Strange and are overall really familiar with the lore and important artifacts in the MCU, you’ll recognize a lot of the decor. We got to talk to Beth Burkhart, the manager of interior design, who also acted as a creative lead in The Sanctum, and she pointed out that the design of the lounge is specifically inspired by the New York Sanctum and the Chamber of Relics.
You’ve got the iconic window that serves as a seal to protect us all against the Multiverse and other threats, and you’ll find that all of the design motifs along the far front of the columns in the lounge are from the Chamber of Relics. You’ll also see a variety of artifacts to represent different time periods and places, as well as direct ties to the films like the Eye of Agamotto, as well as the books that Dr. Strange studies at the Commerce.
We really encourage you to stop in and take in all the details, even if you don’t plan to dine here — it’s incredible!
The Drinks May Not Be For Everyone
While the drinks at The Sanctum are absolutely breathtaking and are incredible for taking photos and making your friends jealous back home, we will say that if you’re someone with more of a simple palette, or you’re on the pickier side, these drinks may not be for you. It really comes down to what your flavor preference is, but we had one of our reporters on board, who isn’t overly picky, mention that only one of the drinks would be one she’d get again.
That drink was The DarkHold for $15, which is made with Amaro Averna, Patron Xo Cafe, Agave Nectar, Milk Salted Caramel, and Ethel Chocolates. It’s a fantastic dessert drink that’s served slightly warm, and is served in what looks like a French moka pot. They pour the drink in front of you, then unscrew the bottom, which is where you see a truffle come out that has salted caramel foam. It was sweet, easy to sip on, and wasn’t overwhelming, which we appreciated.
Again, they do have lots of different drinks for various palettes, but we think you’ll enjoy the drinks even more here if you’re open to being super adventurous or stronger flavors.
The Waffles? ELITE
We grabbed the Mystic Waffle for $5 while we were here as well, and we cannot express enough how much we LOVED it. This is Custard or mixed berry served with a maple syrup or hazelnut spread, and we personally got custard with the syrup. The waffles did take a moment to come out, but only because they’re made fresh, and it was entirely worth it. The outside was so fresh and warm with a bit of a crisp to it, while the inside was nice and fluffy.
We had the perfect ratio of waffle to custard, and while we didn’t dislike the berry version, we’d recommend the custard over the berry 100 times over. Now, we don’t necessarily think it’s worth coming out of your way for, but if you’re nearby and don’t want any of the included desserts on board, and don’t mind paying extra, this is a great option! They were $5, too, which is totally worth it.
We’ll be sure to keep bringing you the latest Disney news to help you plan for your upcoming vacations, so stay tuned to DFB!
