As the U.S. Government shutdown stretches on, the political showdown is putting increasing pressure on the country’s aviation infrastructure to the point where sections of the country’s airspace may be shut down week.
According to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, beginning next week, “You will see mass flight delays. You’ll see mass cancellations, and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace, because we just cannot manage it, because we don’t have the air traffic controllers.”
Duffy further specified what kind of cuts are coming, with 40 “high-volume” areas having their air traffic cut by 10% in the coming days to cope with shortages of air traffic controllers, 13,000 of whom are currently working without pay.
While the FAA has not formally announced which U.S. airports may have their capacity cut, CBS News provided the following preliminary list, which the outlet said was provided to them by an FAA source:
- Anchorage International (ANC)
- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL)
- Boston Logan International (BOS)
- Baltimore/Washington International (BWI)
- Charlotte Douglas International (CLT)
- Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International (CVG)
- Dallas Love (DAL)
- Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA)

- George Bush Houston Intercontinental (IAH)
- Indianapolis International (IND)
- New York John F Kennedy International (JFK)
- Las Vegas Harry Reid International (LAS)
- Los Angeles International (LAX)
- New York LaGuardia (LGA)
- Orlando International (MCO)
- Chicago Midway (MDW)
- Memphis International (MEM)
- Miami International (MIA)
- Minneapolis/St Paul International (MSP)

These aviation issues have become the latest battleground in the government shutdown, which is nearing 40 days after beginning earlier this fall. The shutdown, which was spurred by debate over healthcare funding, has led to a back-and-forth between the Trump Administration, Republicans, and Democrats over who is to “blame” for the shutdown.
With the U.S. Government shutdown continuing on, the country’s aviation apparatus is struggling. Stay tuned to DFB for further developments.

Flyng out of EWR on 11/11 to MCO with return flight 11/19
MCO has a security wait time page which is very useful for current wait times for the various terminals.
GRR to MCO 11/14 returning 11/23. I’m not too worried about getting to MCO as so far GRR isn’t on any lists I’ve seen but am a bit concerned about the return flight.
Hey AJ & DFB Team,
Thanks for all you do to provide updated information on all things related to WDW! I was wondering if you could put together an article or a YouTube video (or both) that provided tips for folks who are thinking about a trip to WDW in the next couple months, but are concerned about the impact of potential flight cancellations. Some concerns are:
– if airline flights are cancelled, what are the policies for hotel refunds or rescheduling? Are there any “good neighbor” or other hotels that have particularly good refund policies?
– what is the Disney policy regarding ticket refunds or modifying dates for theme park tickets if flights are cancelled?
– do you have any suggestions for companies that provide travel insurance?
