Two aircraft came within feet of each other, avoiding a collision on a runway in the south of France on September 21st, in what is being called a “serious incident,” per Aviation Source News.
Nouvelair flight BJ586 from Tunis nearly collided with easyJet flight U24706 after accidentally approaching the wrong runway at the Nice Côte d’Azur airport.
The Nouvelair flight was supposed to land on runway 04L instead of where it attempted to land on runway 04R at 11:30 PM on September 21st, apparently due to poor weather conditions. Flightradar24 indicates the airplane was just 50 feet above the easyJet flight before performing a “go-around.” Both planes were Airbus A320s.
The aircraft ended up landing safely on runway 04L around 15 minutes later. The easyJet flight was preparing to take off for Nantes when it was instead taxied back to the gate and cancelled “in line with procedures.”
EasyJet passengers told Aviation Source News that they heard a “deafening roar” from the engines of the Nouvelair plane during the incident. No injuries were reported from passengers or crew on either aircraft.
The Nice Côte d’Azur airport has two parallel runways that are quite close to each other, and the French Bureau d’Enquetes et d’Analyses, or Office of Investigation and Analysis, has confirmed it launched an investigation into the “serious incident.” The French aviation authority said a team of four investigators will investigate on site.
Thunderstorms were active in the area at the time of the incident, which may have contributed to the error.
French transport minister Philippe Tabarot said on X/Twitter, “Yesterday, a significant incident occurred at Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, where a collision involving two aircraft from the companies Nouvelair and easyJet was narrowly avoided.
“I immediately requested that an investigation be launched by the Bureau of Investigation and Analysis to shed full light on the precise circumstances of this event.”
An easyJet spokesperson reported to The Independent that the plane had been waiting on clearance for take-off from air traffic control when the Nouvelair aircraft approached.
The airline said: “The safety and wellbeing [sic] of our customers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority, and in line with procedures, we are fully cooperating with the safety investigation that has been launched in order to understand what happened.”
