We often stress the importance of staying hydrated at Disney World and beyond, but if you own this particular water bottle — you should probably (definitely) get rid of it.
Walmart is recalling around 850,000 stainless steel water bottles because the lid can “forcefully eject” and strike consumers. As of writing, two people have suffered vision loss from the water bottles, the Associated Press reports.
This recall is for Walmart’s “Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles,” which have been sold in stores since 2017. A notice published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission indicates that the water bottles pose “serious impact and laceration hazards.”
The report says that when consumers attempt to open the bottles “after food, carbonated beverages or perishable beverages, such as juice or milk, are stored inside over time,” the lid can forcefully eject.
As of the announcement, which was posted on July 10th, Walmart received reports of three consumers who were injured after being struck in the face by these lids when opening the bottles. Two of these people “suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye.”
If you own one of these water bottles, it is recommended that you stop using it immediately and contact Walmart for a full refund. You can also bring the bottles to your local Walmart store to obtain compensation.
“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” Walmart said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. The company added that it had “fully cooperated” with the CPSC and the manufacturer of the recalled product “to remove it from our stores and notify consumers.”
The stainless steel base of the bottle is silver, and the lid is black — there’s also an Ozark Trail logo embedded onto the side of it.
We also recently reported on a recall for Anker portable chargers due to “melting of plastic components, smoke, and fire hazards.” You can read more here.
We’ll be on the lookout for additional updates regarding this recall and any others you need to know about. In the meantime, make sure you stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest news from Disney and beyond.
