When it comes to streaming services, things are changing…and fast…
It doesn’t even seem like it was that long ago when Netflix was about the only streaming service on the market, but now there are TONS to choose from, including Disney’s own Disney+ and Hulu. Amazon’s Prime Video also offers streaming (although, honestly, who has Prime just for streaming — it’s all about that free shipping, right?). Amazon also owns a free streaming service, Freevee, but we’ve got some bad news for those who use it: Freevee will be shutting down for good soon.
According to CNBC, Amazon will be shutting down Freevee, a free ad-supported streaming service, in August, which is a stand-alone free streaming TV service. Freevee’s content will then be consolidated into Prime Video.
Freevee opened its doors in 2019 and was originally owned by IMDb, a site Amazon bought in 1998. Freevee offered original shows and some Prime Video content with ads for free through its app. That app will be going away in August. “Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and Live TV,” stated a notice sent out to Freevee users.
Amazon had previously stated that it had plans to shutter the service. When the app shuts down, current Freevee users will be able to watch shows and movies on Prime Video for free without a subscription to Amazon’s Prime loyalty program, per CNBC.

Amazon launched ads on Prime Video in 2024, although Prime members can watch content without ads for an additional $2.99 per month. Most streaming services have now embraced ad-supported tiers as part of their subscription options, including Disney+ and Netflix.
