Test Track is speeding back into EPCOT this summer — but it’s not the same ride you remember.
After over a year of being closed, Test Track is finally reopening at EPCOT on July 22nd, 2025, and yes, there are some big changes in store. From new rules in the queue to a reshuffling of Lightning Lane access, Disney is rolling out a fresh new version of this thrill ride — and with it, some fresh new systems you’ll want to understand before you show up ready to race. Here’s a quick breakdown of the changes you can expect when Test Track 3.0 hits the pavement.
Let’s go over the new rules you’ll want to know before you ride.
1. There Are THREE Ways to Enter the Ride Now
This might not be news to veteran EPCOT guests, but it’s worth pointing out that when Test Track reopens, you’ll have three choices for how to get in line: the Standby Entrance, the Single Rider Entrance, and the Lightning Lane.
The Standby Entrance is your traditional wait-in-line-and-go route. The Single Rider line is usually a faster option, but you’ll be seated wherever there’s a gap, so if you’re riding with a group, you won’t be riding together. Then there’s the Lightning Lane, which skips the wait entirely (assuming you’ve reserved your spot ahead of time — more on that below). Bottom line: If you’re planning to ride Test Track during your EPCOT day, know what queue strategy works best for you before you get there.
2. Test Track Is Now a Tier 1 Lightning Lane Multi Pass Attraction
Big change alert. When Test Track reopens, it’ll be part of EPCOT’s Lightning Lane Multi Pass system as a Tier 1 attraction. That’s a big deal for planning your day.
Here’s how the new tiers will look starting July 22nd:
Guests may choose ONE attraction from the following Tier 1 list:
- Test Track
- Frozen Ever After
- Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
Guests may choose TWO attractions (or all 3) from the following Tier 2 list:
- Soarin’ Around the World
- Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival
- Journey Into Imagination with Figment
- Living With the Land
- Mission: SPACE
- The Seas with Nemo and Friends
- Spaceship Earth
- Turtle Talk with Crush
This change bumps Soarin’ out of Tier 1 and into Tier 2, which is kind of a win for folks who love that ride — it just became way easier to access with Lightning Lane. But it also means that if Test Track is your must-do, you’ll need to prioritize it over Remy or Frozen when locking in your Tier 1 pick.
3. No Virtual Queue — You’ll Need to Wait or Book Ahead
Unlike Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Test Track will not be using a Virtual Queue when it reopens.
That means if you want to ride and you didn’t snag a Lightning Lane reservation, you’re going to need to brave the Standby line or roll the dice with Single Rider. That’s a big departure from some of EPCOT’s other headliners, and it’s important for your game plan. For families who don’t want to split up and aren’t using the Lightning Lane Multi Pass, the wait time could get long fast, especially in the middle of the day.
So… How Did We Get to Test Track 3.0?
Let’s rewind for a second. Test Track has been around in some form for decades, and this isn’t its first overhaul. The original version opened in March 1999, replacing the beloved but slow-moving World of Motion. It was the first E-Ticket thrill ride at EPCOT and took riders through a simulated GM vehicle testing facility, full of rough road conditions, brake tests, and, of course, that iconic high-speed outdoor loop.
In 2012, the ride shut down for a total makeover, reopening that December as what fans call Test Track 2.0. This version added a design-your-own-car element, switched the overall vibe to something much more neon and digital, and shifted sponsorship to Chevrolet. That version stuck around for over a decade before closing in June 2024 for yet another major update.
Now, in 2025, we’re getting Test Track 3.0 — and Disney’s Imagineers are pulling some nostalgia into the mix. They’ve said this version will pay tribute to the past, present, and future of transportation, with nods to World of Motion and new scenes that showcase how tech shapes our lives on the road.
Expect a new queue featuring six themed exhibits about the people and vehicles pushing boundaries. And on the ride itself, there will be more immersive show scenes (including an outdoor scenic route) meant to highlight the human side of innovation — friends, family, and the joy of the journey.
If you’re planning to ride Test Track after July 22nd, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind before you hit the gas. First, figure out which of the three queue options makes the most sense for your group. The Standby line is always available, but it could get long fast, especially with no Virtual Queue in play. The Single Rider line might move faster, but you’ll be separated from your group and miss out on some of the main queue elements. And if you’re using the Lightning Lane Multi Pass system, remember that Test Track is now a Tier 1 option, which means you’ll have to choose it instead of Frozen Ever After or Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. If this ride is a must-do for you, grab that Tier 1 reservation early. And finally, be ready for some serious traffic in that Standby line. With no Virtual Queue available, the only way in is to wait it out or book ahead.
