Traveling isn’t easy, and it only gets harder the longer your flight is, the earlier/later in the day it is, the more people you travel with — do you see where this is going? Don’t even get us STARTED about driving.
Bottom line: traveling is NOT EASY, but there are things that can make it a little easier. Maybe that looks like paying for a window or aisle seat so you can be more comfortable, upgrading your seat, or making sure you have movies and/or books downloaded to keep yourself and/or your kids busy as you fly. But do you know what would make flying way harder? STANDING SEATS.
No, unfortunately we’re not kidding. Business Insider recently reported that Italian seat manufacturer recently unveiled a new design that could reduce the cost of travel and allow for more seats per plane. The caveat? YOU’RE STANDING UP.
EXCUSE us?! What is this, Pipeline from SeaWorld Orlando? Why in the world would we want to STAND UP (practically) on our flight? This isn’t accessible for many people, and frankly just isn’t comfortable for many more. The designer proudly mentioned that it cut the space between seats — trust us, we see it, and we hate it. But it gets better! They have TRAY TABLES. (And by that we mean, goodness gracious, please take it away.)
Apparently, this would allow for airplanes to add 20% more passengers on board each flight, but let’s be honest — there will likely be 50% less people on every single flight because I think most of us would freeze in fear if we ever saw these on a plane. Not to worry though, some users on X have spoken up saying they work on airplane seats, and that there’s no way these would ever pass inspection. Listen, we know people lie on the internet all the time, but WOW do we hope that’s true, because we don’t think the words “standing seats” should ever be put in the same sentence as “airplane.”
While it doesn’t seem like these will become reality anytime soon, some airlines have expressed interest in standing seats, and that has us VERY nervous. Don’t worry, we’ll be keeping a VERY close eye on this and plan to warn you if there’s ever the chance we’ll have to choose between standing on our flight for a cheap ticket or sitting down and spending a small fortune.

Short flights? Greatly reduced prices? I’m in.
I already have no desire to fly anytime soon as airplanes are falling out of the sky a bit too often over here in the US. This would seal the deal on never flying again. They still have ships to get to EuroDisney, right?! 😉
Standing seats on an airplane? Sorry, that’s not happening. As far as driving goes, my wife doesn’t like to fly and we drive to where we want to go. We live in North Texas and have driven to WDW several times since we’ve moved here. It takes us two days. We can stop when we want. (No “Buc-ee’s” stops on any air flight that I know of.) Sure, we’re not at our destination the same day as flying but we don’t mind. I know it’d not for everyone.
This would also translate to shipping your luggage via UPS or FedEx. since the extra weight from the additional passengers will affect the planes ability to fly properly.
Truely Scary!!!!
We are flying Southwest, but we always have a plan B……..Rent a car, drive down from VA. turn the car in at airport and hop on shuttle to resort where my ECV awaits me.
Standing up on an aeroplane seems as silly as putting an ashtray on a motorbike –
I could see this for short flights, the around 1-hour kind not a 4-hour flight. If this were to move forward, I can see regional flights doing something like this. I could also see trains really loving this change as some people would just stop flying.
Those seats don’t look remotely comfortable.
