There are certain places you just can’t go in the Disney parks — no matter how hard you might want to. No one knows this truth more intimately than us.
We know the parks like the back of our hands, and if you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “Man, I really wish I could actually visit the Touch and Taste Labs on Journey Into Imagination,” this might just apply to you, too. So, consider this our official list of forbidden places we wish we could explore in Disney World!
We’ve been to every single place possible in the Disney World parks and hotels — at least, those that aren’t forbidden to visitors! We’ve even had the lucky chance of going to some off-limits places thanks to behind-the-scenes tours, but these places are forbidden even to us!
Cinderella Castle Suite
Okay, technically this one isn’t “forbidden” as there are ways to access the Cinderella Castle Suite — but it certainly isn’t easy and it’s even more rare. It was originally designed to be a suite for Walt Disney and his family, but Walt passed away before the completion of Disney World. The apartment was left unfinished but was eventually turned into office space. Then, in 2006, for the “Year of A Million Dreams” celebration, the Cinderella Castle Suite was finished as we know and love it today!
Unfortunately, you can’t pay to stay in this hotel room. Generally, you’ll have to be invited or win a contest to get the chance to spend the night. We told you it was exclusive!
Sunset Room at the Tower of Terror
You’ve probably walked right past the grand old Sunset Room restaurant many times, but you’ve never stayed for dinner — because it’s not a real restaurant! The Sunset Room is a chic (fake) restaurant located inside the Hollywood Tower Hotel (Tower of Terror) that’s hidden behind a door. Oh, how we wish it were real, though!
Today, there’s not much left but dust, locked doors, and that menu, still posted with the specials of the day, which you can read yourself on the way to the hotel’s gift shop. While you can’t visit the Sunset Room, you can occasionally explore the Hollywood Tower Hotel lobby on tours and select photoshoots.
Haunted Mansion Ballroom
If there was any ride scene we’d want to transport ourselves into, the Haunted Mansion ballroom scene would be at the top of the list! We’ve always dreamed of sitting down to that intricate dinner at that long table that commands the room and eating to our heart’s content — before getting up and joining the ghosts in a waltz, of course.
Unfortunately, the Haunted Mansion ballroom is off-limits to visitors. You used to be able to get a ground-level view of it on the Marceline to Magic Kingdom Tour at Disney World, but that tour is no longer available!
Above the Shops on Main Street, U.S.A.
Sure, we’ve been inside the shops on Main Street, U.S.A. countless times — but we’ve never been upstairs and above them! We know that there really aren’t a whole lot of exciting things going on up there, but they just look like cute little apartments and offices, so why wouldn’t we want to go exploring for a bit?!
The real truth is far less exciting, although we suppose apartments and offices aren’t really all that exciting to begin with — but if you were to go upstairs at any of these spots, you’d likely find actual offices, storage rooms, and Cast Member break rooms.
Top of the Tree of Life
Okay, those who are terrified of heights might not agree with this one, but how cool would it be to see all of Animal Kingdom from the TOP of the Tree of Life?! It’s not a real tree, and Disney probably has a way of getting all the way up there already — so why not give us the full tour? We think it’s a perfectly reasonable, totally safe request.
Even if we couldn’t get to the top, we’d settle for a tour of all the animals carved into the tree trunk or even just a peek at how it all works!
Mary Poppins Ride
Disney promised us a Mary Poppins attraction at the UK pavilion, but as you may have noticed — there is no such thing currently at EPCOT or anywhere else in Disney World! Disney eventually released a statement that the project was postponed, but most signs point to it being canceled altogether.
The attraction was reported to be a “step in time down Cherry Tree Land past Admiral Boom’s house, then enter Number 17, home of the Banks family.” This is where the magical journey was set to begin. Dick Van Dyke even helped make the original announcement at the D23 Expo. While it’s possible this attraction could still come to EPCOT in the future, we’ll just have to wish we could experience this forbidden ride for now!
