Did you know that Disney World does a LOT for animals?

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is home to around 300 different species of animals, and Cast Members constantly educate us about those animals. But did you know that Disney is also at the forefront of conservation efforts, as well as animal breeding efforts? Well, we’ve got some BIG — and happy — news about the latter. A new baby elephant has been born at the park!

So this is a big deal because this is the first African elephant calf born in Disney World in seven years! Her name is Corra, and she is SO ADORABLE. Her mom is Nadirah, and this is Nadirah’s first baby. And if you want to talk Circle of Life, Nadirah was also born in Animal Kingdom.

Corra’s aunt Luna was around to help Nadirah through the process of birth (sisters supporting each other, y’all). Corra, who weighs 218 pounds, will soon meet the rest of her family, including her other aunt, Stella, and her grandma, Donna. Believe it or not, it’s very common for adult female elephants to help raise the young ‘uns until they’re around eight years old. Family is EVERYTHING.

The animal care team at Animal Kingdom, which includes the keepers, veterinarians, and scientists, are going to be doing post-natal exams and making sure Nadirah is healthy while also making sure that Corra is healthy and properly bonded to her family before she gets to join the rest of the herd. That means it might be a little while before Corra makes her first appearance on the savanna, so don’t expect to see her out there for a while.
