The actor’s strike finally came to an end late last week.
After 118 days, SAG-AFTRA finally struck a deal with Hollywood. But now the question becomes, what kind of impacts did this long-running labor outage have on the film industry? According to Disney CEO Bob Iger, in an interview with CNBC before the company’s Q4 earnings call, the damage to the company has been negligible up to this point. But now we’re starting to see some changes coming from the Disney studios due to this recent strike.
Now that movie production is up and running again, we would expect to see all the news signaling the up-and-coming movies that will be getting released soon. But it seems like there’s been more of an impact than what Iger might have let on. It seems that many, if not all, movies coming from any one of the Disney-owned studios have had shifted release dates.
Marvel’s new Deadpool movie was expected to open on May 3rd,2024, but is now being moved to a July 26th, 2024 launch date. July 26th was intended to be the release date for the new Captain America movie, but that has now been moved out of 2024 entirely and into 2025. Oddly, according to Deadline, the Captain America movie had better progress in production, but that seems not to be an issue now that Captain America will be opening later than Deadpool.
Several movies, such as Marvel’s Thunderbolts, hadn’t even started production due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. So now Thunderbolts has been moved from December 20th, 2024 to July 25th, 2025, with The Lion King sequel, Mufasa, taking its place on December 20th, 2024 instead of its original July 5th opening date. There have also been other unnamed movies completely removed from the schedule.
The new, shifted schedule for 2024 features several untitled movies and later release dates. You can see the full list below.
Perhaps, the strikes’ impact on the Disney company financially was negligible, but the impacts on production seemed to have been significant. Now that studios across Hollywood are preparing to return to filming, we could see these impacts in more companies than just Disney (and its associated studios). We’ll just have to wait and see what happens as actors return to work, hopefully with the improved conditions they were hoping for.
