Reducing highway speeds by 5 to 10 mph can increase fuel economy by 7 to 14%! It may not sound like a lot, but it certainly adds up.

Avoid Rush Hour Traffic and Stop and Go Traffic

Rapid acceleration and hard braking can lower fuel economy by 15 to 30% at highway speeds and 10 to 40% in stop-and-go traffic. So if at all possible, travel at off-travel times and stick to open highways without frequent stop signs or traffic lights.

We also suggest using a fast pass on toll roads if you have it, as it can allow you to travel constantly while other lanes may be stopped.

Using consistent speed on highways is better for your gas mileage. However, we don’t recommend using this feature on backroads or roads with lots of stop signs or traffic lights.

Even if you do increase your gas mileage, you are going to have to get gas at some point. Save money on the gas you do have to get by using apps like Upside, Gas Guru, or Gas Buddy!

Through these apps, you can look ahead to see what gas prices are, and some will offer you cash back if you claim the offer before getting gas at the pump. A few cents back a gallon may not seem like a lot at first, but it adds up quick, and every little bit counts!
