The airline industry has faced some unique challenges over the past few years.
Not only is there a pilot shortage, but many airlines have been cutting flights, despite increased demand for travel. Now, a HUGE merger could change the industry even more, and that merger is one step closer to actually happening.
We previously reported that JetBlue would buy Spirit Airlines for $3.8 billion. Their board of directors has approved the merger agreement, which would make the airline the fifth-largest in the U.S. Now, according to CNBC, Spirit’s shareholders have finally approved the merger.
This comes after a months-long ordeal that even, at one point, involved Spirit potentially merging with Frontier Airlines. However, that deal was terminated, and now, Spirit and JetBlue are planning to merge instead.
However, that doesn’t mean that the merger has already gone through. Although both airlines hope to close the deal officially in early 2024, they need to convince federal regulators that their merger won’t drive up fares and harm competition.
If federal regulators approve the merger, JetBlue will get rid of the Spirit brand. JetBlue has plans to redo Spirit’s airplanes similar to its own planes, which have seatback screens and more legroom.
We’ll continue to keep an eye on the merger and let you know what happens next, so stay tuned to DFB for more! In the meantime, you can see which two airlines are making it easier to fly into Disney World and learn more about Orlando International Airport’s new terminal.
