The ongoing streaming wars between several of the industry’s biggest names have prompted new content, price increases, and a shift from ad-free streaming to ad-supported tiers.
We’ve already seen that Disney+ is going to get a new ad-supported tier this coming December, with the cost of ad-free streaming going up by a few dollars. Later, Netflix announced that its own ad-supported tier would debut before Disney’s, in November of this year. Now, we have an update on the ad-supported tier coming to Netflix, including the cost of each plan, what the ads will look like, and when it will actually debut.
Previously, Netflix planned to release the new ad-supported option starting on November 1st, 2022. Now, that date has been pushed back a bit, and the new plan will debut on November 3rd, 2022, in the U.S. (CNBC).
When it comes out, the ad-supported tier will cost $6.99 a month. That price is notably $1 less than Disney+’s proposed $7.99 a month for their own ad-supported plan. With an earlier release date and cheaper price, Netflix seems to be trying to beat Disney+ at the ad-supported streaming game.
Netflix’s other plans include Basic (no ads — $9.99/month), Standard (no ads — $15.49/month), and Premium (no ads — $19.99/month). Take a look at the chart below to see the differences between these plans.
The ad-supported tier on Netflix will include “an average of 4 to 5 minutes of commercials each hour,” and users won’t be able to download movies and TV shows to the app. Also, some shows and movies will not be included in this tier. Each commercial will be 15 or 30 seconds long.
According to Deadline, Netflix has confirmed that new movies will only have pre-roll ads, and then the film will play without interruption after those commercials. A Netflix representative said, “We’ll try to preserve that sort of cinematic model there.” Movies that have been out for a while will have ads both before and during the movie.
As a reminder, the ad-supported tier of Disney+ will debut on December 8th, 2022. Hulu and ESPN+ have also seen price increases, and the ad-free version of Disney+ will be increasing in price as well.
