It’s been over a year since Broadway initially went dark due to the ongoing health crisis.
Throughout the year, there have been a few ways to get your Broadway fix in, but it’s not quite the same as sitting in a theater and watching the live performances. And, as we approach the current suspension of ticket sales through May 30th, 2021, there may be hope for Broadway fans who are hoping for a return to the theater.
According to Theater Mania, New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio, has announced that the city will be reopening this summer on July 1st, crediting vaccine rollout and other precautions the city has taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This will mean that stores, businesses, offices, and even the theater can reopen after a long year of closures.
So, what does this mean for Broadway? Well, according to de Blasio, we can expect all shows to return to normal capacity for a full reopening in September, with some smaller shows returning even earlier than that. As he said during his announcement, “Broadway takes time because they have to mount a whole production,” so it may take a few months for the operations to return to normal.
As of today, Broadway has not announced their official plans for reopening just yet, but we will keep an eye out for updates. This is a developing story so stay tuned to DFB for the latest!
