Yesterday, the state of California released the long-awaited theme park reopening guidelines, which signaled what could be a longer than anticipated wait before guests can visit the Disneyland Resort once again.
Now, we’re learning about another prominent institution with the Disney name in Southern California that is further delaying when its doors can open once again, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic, one of the largest non-profit performance groups in the state, announced that they will be canceling all upcoming events at their resident venue, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, through June 9th, 2021. The concert hall is located in Downtown Los Angeles, approximately thirty miles from Disneyland.
Since the Walt Disney Concert Hall is located in Los Angeles County, they will be under a different reopening timeline than Disneyland, which is located in Orange County. As of this writing, Los Angeles County is still in the Purple “Widespread” tier, and Orange County is in the Red “Substantial” Tier.
The state of California has yet to release guidelines that pertain to large performing arts venues, which could be one of the last industries to fully reopen nationwide. The Walt Disney Concert Hall seats 2,265 patrons would likely need to reduce that capacity considerably to accommodate for social distancing. In the meantime, the L.A. Philharmonic will look to digital programming to engage with their audiences during the prolonged closure.

The extended closure of the Walt Disney Concert Hall points to remarks made by California Governor Gavin Newsom earlier this week, where he stressed how the expectation of things to return to normal “should not, cannot, be this calendar year. For the overwhelming majority of us to get to where we need to go as a nation, as a state, that will not happen until 2021.”
We will continue to be on the lookout for news coming out of Disneyland and California as the state continues its “slow and stringent” reopening.
